PET/CT and MRI in Prostate Cancer

PET/CT and MRI in Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer remains one of the most common cancers and is among the most lethal in men worldwide. It is significant that prostate cancer is identified in the early stages as the disease can be highly metastatic leading to a low survival rate. Therefore, it is essential for patients to have a better prognosis and able to be treated early. The diagnostic tools to identify prostate cancer have developed throughout the years which includes but is not limited to transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy and histopathology prior to radical prostatectomy. However, biopsies have been found to be invasive in addition to studies demonstrating an underdiagnosis of patients who have advanced prostate cancer.

Vitamin D and Health, Volume 109 reviews the versatility of vitamin D in enhancing the immune system and its potential role in combating many chronic diseases. While vitamin D's role in enhancing bone health is well established, recent studies demonstrated the safety and efficacy of peri-operative vitamin D supplementation in cardiac patients and its impact on post-operative outcomes. Chapters in this new release include discussions on Vitamin D and Immune Function, Vitamin D and Bone Heath, Vitamin D and Cardiovascular Disease, Vitamin D and Cancer, Vitamin D and Diabetes, Vitamin D and Neurological Diseases, Vitamin D and Celiac Disease, and much more. - Provides the latest information on the possible mechanisms of action by the active metabolite of vitamin D, 1,25(OH) in immune cells - Covers the beneficial roles of vitamin D in bone health, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancers, and celiac disease - Discusses vitamin D's ability to reduce the risk of severity and death from viral diseases such as influenza, COVID-19, and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

Emerging Biomarkers in Personalized Therapy of Urologic Tumors

The identification of effective biomarkers has becoming a major focus in cancer research, mainly due to the necessity of selecting potentially responsive patients in order to improve their outcomes, as well as to reduce the toxicity and costs related to ineffective treatments. In genitourinary tumors, the lack of biomarkers does not allow for the development of personalized strategies for a single patient, thus representing a major goal in this field. This eBook includes the description of these emerging techniques and identify the most promising biomarkers in genitourinary tumors.

Cancer Immunology is intended as an up-to-date, clinically relevant review of cancer immunology and immunotherapy. This volume is focused on immunopathology of cancers. The interactions between cancerous cells and various components of the innate and adaptive immune system are fully described. The principal focus, however, is very much on clinical aspects, the aim being to educate clinicians in the clinical implications of the most recent research and new developments in the field. Over the past decade, understanding of the interactions between the immune system and cancerous cells has increased markedly, leading to the development of combinatorial immunotherapeutic strategies to combat cancer. This translational, clinically oriented book will be of special value to clinical immunologists, hematologists and oncologists.

The neocortical column

The columnar organization is currently the most widely held hypothesis to explain the cortical processing of information, making its study of potential interest to any researcher interested in the cerebral cortex, both in a healthy and pathological state. Enough data are now available so that the Blue Brain Project can realistically tackle a model of the sensory column in rat. Few will deny however, that a comprehensive framework of the function and structure of columns has remained elusive. One set of persistent problems, as frequently remarked, is nomenclature. "Column" is used freely and promiscuously to refer to multiple, distinguishable entities; for example, cellular or dendritic minic...

Progress in Tumor Marker Research

Tumour markers are molecules occurring in blood or tissue that are associated with cancer, and whose measurement or identification is useful in patient diagnosis or clinical management. This book analyses potential signals of cancerous tumours, otherwise known as markers or indicators. This includes, direct and rapid determination of cancer antigen, potential tumour markers for cholangiocarcinoma, melanoma inhibitory activity, metastatic uveal melanoma, measurement of tumour oxygenation, bladder cancer markers, epithelial cell adhesion and progression markers in prostate tumours.

Bayesian Estimation and Inference in Computational Anatomy and Neuroimaging: Methods & Applications

Computational Anatomy (CA) is an emerging discipline aiming to understand anatomy by utilizing a comprehensive set of mathematical tools. CA focuses on providing precise statistical encodings of anatomy with direct application to a broad range of biological and medical settings. During the past two decades, there has been an ever-increasing pace in the development of neuroimaging techniques, delivering in vivo information on the anatomy and physiological signals of different human organs through a variety of imaging modalities such as MRI, x-ray, CT, and PET. These multi-modality medical images provide valuable data for accurate interpretation and estimation of various biological parameters ...
