Excerpt from A Memoir of John Fanning Watson, the Annalist of Philadelphia and New York: Prepared by Request of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and Read in Their Hall, Monday Evening, February 11, 1861 On my asking him one day, how he, who had been so much engaged in a laborious profession, and so much in public life (he was at one time Attorney General of the United States), had acquired so thorough and accurate knowledge of 'the old Greek and Roman authors.
