Following the publication in 2008 of Dictionnaire des emprunts arabes dans les langues de l'Afrique de l'Ouest et en Swahili, Dictionary of Arabic Loanwords in the Languages of Central and East Africa completes and offers the results of over 20 years of research on Arabic loanwords. The volume reveals the impact Arabic has had on African languages far beyond the area of its direct influence. As in the previous volume, the author analyses the loans in the greatest possible number of languages spoken in the area, based on the publications he found in the most important libraries of the main universities and academic institutions specialised in the field. By suggesting the most frequently used Arabic loanwords, the dictionary will be an invaluable guide to African-language lexicon compilers, amongst others.

There's also quite a bit of sex. Erudite, impassioned and sometimes plain naughty, What Your Teacher Didn't Tell You is a stimulating plunge into aspects of our past that have been kept from us. There's even a bonus chapter! Illustrated with dozens of sepia-toned photographs, many from the author's collection of antiques.

Since the appearance of the first science fiction magazine in 1926, thousands of short stories have been published in periodicals devoted to the genre. These stories cover a wide range of subjects, from spacecraft to the human condition, and feature little-known authors as well as masters like Ellison and Asimov. In the past, finding which issue of what magazine ran a certain story was nearly impossible. This much-needed reference tool provides valuable assistance in the daunting task of locating short stories published in science fiction magazines, providing exhaustive indexes to magazines, authors, and titles, allowing a variety of options for research on 34,000 stories appearing in nearly 5,000 issues of 133 genre magazines. Stories from all major American publications, as well as from several minor periodicals, are indexed. Also included is an appendix of the best known and most prolific contributors, giving the titles of all their stories in this work (necessary because the huge author index does not show titles). A guide to how to use this book clarifies its features for the researcher.
This accessible and authoritative introduction is essential for education students and researchers needing to use quantitative methods for the first time. Using datasets from real-life educational research and avoiding the use of mathematical formulae, the author guides students through the essential techniques that they will need to know, explaining each procedure using the latest version of SPSS. The datasets can also be downloaded from the book′s website, enabling students to practice the techniques for themselves. This revised and updated second edition now also includes more advanced methods such as log linear analysis, logistic regression, and canonical correlation. Written specifically for those with no prior experience of quantitative research, this book is ideal for education students and researchers in this field.
