The Post-American Middle East
After two decades of War on Terror, it is particularly important, for both academic and policy purposes, to clearly understand why the US formidable mobilization of means and might has transformed into a such a blatant geostrategic defeat of the US and its allies in the broad Middle East. This is all the more paradoxical that the WOT achieved a series of tactical victories – such as the toppling of hostile regimes in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya; the crippling of the national economies of enemy states by sanctions; the successful targeted killing of lead terrorist Usama Bin Laden, ISIS cult leaders Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi and his successor, etc. So, why have these tactical victories not led to what was supposed to become, according to the US government, a ‘Greater Middle East’? With most authors being from or living in the Middle East, this book is unique as it brings perspectives and answers from the region. This is crucially important as we are entering, we argue, the era of a Post-American Middle East. International Migration in the 21st Century
This collection tackles the problems surrounding international migration, raising the question of the reasons for, and consequences of, being a migrant in the 21st century. Some of the issues it focuses on include migrant identities, integration, voting behavior, citizenship, and child health encountered in Europe and Turkey. The book also provides psychological, economic and micro-level analysis, together with social and judicial perspectives. In a global world, where in some places frontiers are constructed and in others efforts are made to deconstruct them, the book will appeal to sociologists, historians, political scientists and academics working on regional migration studies. It contributes to the endeavor to understand the global parameters on migration and potential solutions for a boundless global community.
Tertiary Student Migration from Central Asia to Germany
Nargiza Abdullaeva examines student migration phenomenon from Central Asia to Germany. In her research she combines inimitably three levels of analysis: micro level explores Central Asian students’ and graduates’ individual characteristics, their life courses before and during their studies in Germany, students’ return/non-return intentions after graduation in Germany and their motivations. Meso level deals with circular migration and social remittances’ transfer, and the macro level looks into policy mechanisms on the part of sending Central Asian republics and Germany as a receiving country. The findings reveal that the student migration serves as a realistic channel for the out-migration of highly qualified people (brain-drain) and that the brain circulation practically does not exist.
