The loss of biological diversity has become an increased concern over recent years and is now enshrined in international conventions. Most biodiversity in fact occurs in the soil. Soil organisms (especially bacteria, fungi and soil invertebrates) play a major role in the formation of soil structure and are primary agents of decomposition and are drivers of nutrient cycling, and hence agricultural production. This book reviews soil biodiversity in one of the key biodiversity hotspots of the world, i.e. the Amazon and nearby regions of Brazil. It covers both the tropical savannah and rain forests . The work reported is based on a project "Conservation and Sustainable Management of Below-Ground Biodiversity", executed by TSBF-CIAT with co-financing from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implementation support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The book represents a major contribution to the literature and will interest those in biodiversity conservation, soil scienceand ecology and biodiversity conservation.

Antioxidants in Plant-Microbe Interaction

This edited book is focused on antioxidant compounds and their biosynthesis, up-regulation, mechanism of action for selective bioactivity, targeted role and the advancement of their bioactive potential during plant-microbe interaction and other stress conditions. This book also emphasizes on the role of antioxidants in recruiting beneficial microbes in plant surroundings. Antioxidants have multiple biological roles in plants especially in the signalling pathway. These compounds are secondary metabolites produced besides the primary biosynthetic pathway and are associated with growth and development. Besides they also have special role to play during oxidative stress produced via abiotic stim...

This practical handbook describes sampling and laboratory assessment methods for the biodiversity of a number of key functional groups of soil organisms, including insects, earthworms, nematodes, fungi and bacteria. The methods have been assembled and the protocols drafted by a number of scientists associated with the UNEP-GEF funded Conservation and Sustainable Management of Below-Ground Biodiversity Project, executed by the Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility (TSBF) Institute of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). The methods provide a standardized basis for characterizing soil biodiversity and current land uses in terrestrial natural, semi-natural and agroecosystems ...

Connective Branding

This book bridges the gap between strengthening the ‘employee brand’ and the building ‘external brand image’ by synthesizing the two approaches. The result is a blurring of the boundaries and assigning creative powers to both. A customer has a number of interactions with the company, and each of these interactions has an impact on the brand equity account – either positive or negative. Examples of interactions include: the product itself, the purchasing process, the consumption experience, the ‘face’ of the organization, the call center, media etc. The real issue for the company is how to translate the optimized ‘ideal’ customer journey into effective company programmes, ho...

Biological Management of Soil Ecosystems for Sustainable Agriculture

This publication contains the proceedings of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA)/FAO International Technical Workshop on Biological Management of Soil Ecosystems for Sustainable Agriculture, which was held at EMBRAPA-Soybean headquarters in Londrina, Brazil, from 24 to 27 June 2002. The report includes a review of current understanding and knowledge of the biological management of soil ecosystems through a set of case studies from different production systems and socio-economic conditions, in the areas of indicators and assessment of soil health, adaptive management and innovative technologies. A general discussion and review of lessons learned leading to the main recommendations and further steps for the implementation of an International Soil Biodiversity Initiative are also presented. The financial support was provided through the agricultural biodiversity component of the FAO-Netherlands Partnership Programme.

NewsGames - Applied General Theory of Games Based News

This e-book is the second of four volumes of the series Theories of NewsGames authored by journalist Geraldo A. Seabra and Luciene A. Santos. The didactic title, the material was subdivided into four parts - research, narrative, mechanics and social impact. In 2012 it was released the 1st volume of research: 'The Odyssey 100 to NewsGames - A genealogy of the games as information', where the authors draw a timeline on the history of the games as information and news. As the first publication almost all the material used is based on the master's dissertation the journalist Geraldo Seabra and searches made by Luciene Santos, as well as original Blog of NewsGames material. In the 2nd volume of the series, the 3D News is presented as a narrative model of news production recommended for ludic-informational platforms - giving rise to the call NewNews. From the structure of the theoretical foundations of a new Online Journalism model, the advent of 'Drones NewsGames' anticipates the ‘Age of planetary games’ based on news.
