Gustav Theodor Fechner (1801-1887) was a German physicist, psychologist, and philosopher, best known to historians of science as the founder of psychophysics, the experimental study of the relation between mental and physical processes. Michael Heidelberger's exhaustive exploration of Fechner's writings, in relation to current issues in the field, successfully reestablishes Fechner's place in the history and philosophy of science.

A major aim of the books in this series is to promote psychology's appreciation of the neglected giants in its history. The chapters document the significance of these early contributions, many of them made more than a century ago. Most of the chapters are revisions of invited addresses delivered at psychological conventions. Several of the authors are students, colleagues, or offspring of their pioneers and all of them are intrigued by the life and work of the psychologists about whom they have written. All of the portraits are informal; on occasion, even humorous. Some are "impersonations"--telling stories in what were or might have been the pioneer's own words. This book provides source materials for teachers of undergraduate courses in psychology--particularly the history of psychology--who want to add a personal view in their lectures and offer interesting readings for their students. This work presents three advances to scale SNSPDs from few-pixel devices to large detector arrays: atomic layer deposition for the fabrication of uniform superconducting niobium nitride films of few-nanometer thickness, a frequency-multiplexing scheme to operate multiple detectors with a reduced number of lines, and the integration of SNSPDs with free-form polymer structures to achieve efficient optical coupling onto the active area of the detectors.

This work presents the development and application of high-speed fluorescent thermal imaging for quench analysis in high-temperature superconductors (HTS). Using a fluorescent coating, with a temperature-dependent light emission, temperature changes can be calculated over 2D surfaces. The technique uncovered peculiar transient effects in novel HTS tape architectures and also helped to verify and better understand hot spot development in both insulated and non-insulated, HTS–wound pancake coils.
High-temperature superconductors have distinct advantages compared to conventional conductors. Below their critical temperature, superconductors have immeasurably low ohmic losses. To maintain the superconducting state, superconductors require constant cooling. This study aims at identifying the environmental impacts of the application of superconductors in future grid technologies such as superconducting power cables.
