Sono raccolti in questo libro gli interventi al convegno internazionale «A partire da Giancarlo De Carlo», che ha avuto luogo presso la Facoltà di Architettura di Pescara nei giorni 2 e 3 marzo 2006, a poco più di nove mesi dalla scomparsa di GDC. L'iniziativa, promossa dai dipartimenti IDEA e DART e patrocinata dall'IN/Arch, intendeva rendere subito attiva e operante l'eredità complessa e sfaccettata di GDC, per proiettarla immediatamente nell'agire contemporaneo.
Le indagini etnografiche di Pagano
A partire dal 1935, Giuseppe Pagano effettua un lavoro sul campo, esplorando il territorio nazionale in cerca dei più significativi esempi di architettura rurale: che fotografa magistralmente. Con questa ricerca, l’architetto istriano espande il perimetro dell’architettura, includendovi il costruito minore; e questo ampliamento è stato e rimane un prolifico tentativo di rompere la monoliticità disciplinare. Un tentativo nel quale possiamo leggere, oggi, il ruolo decisivo dell’antropologia: disciplina che si dà carico di osservare, comprendere e interpretare la complessa articolazione dell’ambiente fisico e sociale; disciplina indispensabile per l’individuazione dei materiali necessari a un cambiamento radicale nella pratica dell’architettura.

The highly successful Architecture in the Netherlands once again presents a selection of the past year's most remarkable architecture in the Netherlands. The book highlights 30 projects which were realized in 2003, illustrated with photos and plans. The selected projects include work by 2012 Architecten, de Architecten Cie., AAS Architecten, Wiel Arets, Borren Staalenhoef, CePeZed, Claus en Kaan, Karelse van der Meer, KCAP, MVRDV, Neutelings Riedijk, NL Architects, OMA, Onix, Christian Rapp, Soeters Van Eldonk Ponec, Joost Swarte/Mecanoo Architects and René van Zuuk. The yearbook includes four essays by the editors and a roundup of the most important prizes, competitions, exhibitions and publications over the past year. What struck the editors most this year was the evidently renewed interest in the reality of the here and now and the fact that architects are once again drawing inspiration from this reality. Still the question remains whether the future is adequately served by reality or whether we should perhaps also dare to dream of utopia.
