Il romanzo Memorie del sottosuolo esce a puntate nel 1865 sulla rivista "Epoca", in un momento cruciale della vita personale e lavorativa dello scrittore. Questo romanzo si divide in due parti: nella prima si trova il vero e proprio monologo filosofico contro il positivismo e il romanticismo; la seconda parte, invece, tratta la rievocazione memoriale della storia accaduta al protagonista che l'autore usa per dare credito alla malvagità nell'animo degli uomini. Il protagonista delle Memorie, che ha tratti autobiografici di Dostoevskij, è un uomo timido, senza risorse e che viene respinto nel sottosuolo dalla brutalità della vita sociale. Per questo motivo il protagonista cerca di sfogarsi contro qualcuno che si trova più in basso di lui e decide di tormentare Liza, una misera prostituta alle prime armi, che incontra in una gelida sera di neve.
