Challenges of sustainability and transition need innovative tools for the understanding, mapping, designing and governing of manmade sites and territories. Complementary to standard land use categories, such as housing and agriculture, this book of essays introduces eleven ‘interface categories’, labels for land use interactions, transitions, mixes, and spatial and temporal positions in between. Authors from different disciplines describe and illustrate how this set of interfaces resonates with their own projects, challenges and agendas, and how it sheds light on new land use agents, on unregistered forms of land occupation, and on opportunities for socio-economic and ecosystem services. The concept of interfaces encourages the development of adapted modes of planning and management for urban, rural or natural environments, and on different spatial scales.
Britain's emergence as one of Europe's major maritime powers has all too frequently been subsumed by nationalistic narratives that focus on operations and technology. This volume, by contrast, offers a daring new take on Britain's maritime past. It brings together scholars from a range of disciplines to explore the manifold ways in which the sea shaped British history, demonstrating the number of approaches that now have a stake in defining the discipline of maritime history. The chapters analyse the economic, social, and cultural contexts in which English maritime endeavour existed, as well as discussing representations of the sea. The contributors show how people from across the British Isles increasingly engaged with the maritime world, whether through their own lived experiences or through material culture. The volume also includes essays that investigate encounters between English voyagers and indigenous peoples in Africa, and the intellectual foundations of imperial ambition.
This book sets an agenda for the development of historical approaches to criminology. It defines ‘historical criminology’, explores its characteristic strengths and limitations, and considers its potential to enhance, revise and fundamentally challenge dominant modes of thinking about crime and social responses to crime. It considers the following questions: What is historical criminology? What does thinking historically about crime and justice entail? How is historical criminology currently practised? What are the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to historical criminology? How can historical criminology reshape understandings of crime and social responses to crime? H...

Lyn MacDonald's acclaimed history 1914: The Days of Hope, is not so much the story of war as the story of an army. In this vivid account of the first months of the First World War, Lyn Macdonald draws on personal accounts of surviving veterans, bringing to life the disillusionment, the questioning and the heroism of the men of the British Army. The officers and men of 1914 were prepared to fight and ready to lay down their lives because it was their job. These men believed they were fighting the War to end War. 'Once again Lyn Macdonald has collected an extraordinary mass of original accounts, some by old soldiers, some in the form of diaries and journals, even by French civilians . . . Her ...
