Pneumonia merupakan suatu penyakit infeksi pada parenkim paru yang disebabkan oleh sejumlah bakteri yang berbeda, virus parasit atau jamur. Infeksi ini menyebabkan peradangan pada paru dan akumulasi eksudat pada jaringan paru. Selain itu pneumonia juga didefinisikan sebagai peradangan parenkim paru, distal dari bronkiolus terminalis yang mencakup bronkiolus respiratorius dan alveoli, serta menimbulkan konsolidasi paru. Pneumonia merupakan penyakit infeksi yang menyebabkan kematian pada anak-anak di seluruh dunia. Menurut WHO 2019, pneumonia menyumbang 16% dari 5,9 juta kematian balita di dunia dan menjadi penyebab 920.136 anak-anak meninggal dunia di tahun 2019. Sedangkan menurut Riset Kesehatan Dasar (RISKESDAS) kejadian pneumonia mengalami peningkatan pada tahun 2021 dari 2,1% menjadi 2,7% pada tahun 2022. Penyebab pneumonia berasal dari masyarakat atau komunitas (Community Acquired Pneumonia) disebabkan oleh bakteri gram positif. Sedangkan bakteri yang berasal dari rumah sakit (Hospital Acquired Pneumonia) disebabkan oleh bakteri gram negatif, sedangkan pneumonia aspirasi disebabkan oleh bakteri dari jamur, kuman anaerob, dan virus.
