This is the first book on the work of Fernando Costa (b. 1972), an eclectic, self-taught French artist. Costa works in an unusual medium: He collects damaged street signs and cuts them up, smooths them down, and reassembles them, welding the pieces onto large metal plaques to create energetic, colorful works of extraordinary originality. Some of the works are figurative, echoing Pop Art, moments from the artist's life, or people who have influenced him, such as the Beatles, the British cyclist Tom Simpson, or Josephine Baker. Other works flirt with abstraction derived from cubism and the mechanical music of Edgard Varèse. In 2013, he was the 18th artist selected to create the Art Car for the 24 Hours of Le Mans car race, following in the footsteps of Calder, Warhol, and Koons. This work examines the Portuguese and crioulo literatures of the five African Portuguese-speaking countries: Angola; Cape Verde; Guinea Bissau; Mozambique; and Sao Tome and Principe. It offers an introduction to the cultural and historical context within which literature developed in Lusophone Africa, as well as a discussion of the prose and poetry published by the writers from these five countries since independence. As such, the volume is intended not only as a textbook for the student of the literatures of the five Lusophone countries, but also as a cultural and intellectual foundation for the specialist reader with an interest in the former Portuguese colonial empire.
This book provides a general overview and original analysis of new developments and applications in several areas of Computational Intelligence and Information Systems. Computational Intelligence has become an important tool for engineers to develop and analyze novel techniques to solve problems in basic sciences such as physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, environment and social sciences. The material contained in this book addresses the foundations and applications of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support Systems, Complex and Biological Inspired Systems, Simulation and Evolution of Real and Artificial Life Forms, Intelligent Models and Control Systems, Knowledge and Learning Technologies, Web Semantics and Ontologies, Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Intelligent Power Systems, Self-Organized and Distributed Systems, Intelligent Manufacturing Systems and Affective Computing. The contributions have all been written by international experts, who provide current views on the topics discussed and present recent, original insights from their own experience in these fields.
Explores how European nations were remade by the end of empire, through the history of 'returning' settlers from Portuguese Africa.
