Deep connections exist between harmonic and applied analysis and the diverse yet connected topics of machine learning, data analysis, and imaging science. This volume explores these rapidly growing areas and features contributions presented at the second and third editions of the Summer Schools on Applied Harmonic Analysis, held at the University of Genova in 2017 and 2019. Each chapter offers an introduction to essential material and then demonstrates connections to more advanced research, with the aim of providing an accessible entrance for students and researchers. Topics covered include ill-posed problems; concentration inequalities; regularization and large-scale machine learning; unitarization of the radon transform on symmetric spaces; and proximal gradient methods for machine learning and imaging.
Invoking the machinery of Control Theory to control a real-world plant means, on the basis of available a priori knowledge of the plant, design ing/selecting a feasible controller accomplishing the control objective. A priori knowledge about the plant is normally represented as a mathemat ical model, given by physical laws or measurement data. Such a model is inevitably uncertain, due to measurement errors, simplified models of natural laws, neglected dynamics, and the desire to get a model tractable for further computations. Control of Uncertain Systems is therefore an im portant issue, both practically and philosophically. Basically, two different approaches exist: Adaptive Control and Rob...
This contributed volume features chapters based on talks given at the second international conference titled Aspects of Time-Frequency Analysis (ATFA 19), held at Politecnico di Torino from June 25th to June 27th, 2019. Written by experts in harmonic analysis and its applications, these chapters provide a valuable overview of the state-of-the-art of this active area of research. New results are collected as well, making this a valuable resource for readers seeking to be brought up-to-date. Topics covered include: Signal analysis Quantum theory Modulation space theory Applications to the medical industry Wavelet transform theory Anti-Wick operators Landscapes of Time-Frequency Analysis: ATFA 2019 will be of particular interest to researchers and advanced students working in time-frequency analysis and other related areas of harmonic analysis.
This book is based on the full year Ph.D. qualifying course on differentiable manifolds, global calculus, differential geometry, and related topics, given by the author at Washington University several times over a twenty year period. It is addressed primarily to second year graduate students and well prepared first year students. Presupposed is a good grounding in general topology and modern algebra, especially linear algebra and the analogous theory of modules over a commutative, unitary ring. Although billed as a "first course" , the book is not intended to be an overly sketchy introduction. Mastery of this material should prepare the student for advanced topics courses and seminars in di...
This volume carries the same title as that of an international conference held at the National University of Singapore, 9OCo11 January 2006 on the occasion of Roger E. Howe''s 60th birthday. Authored by leading members of the Lie theory community, these contributions, expanded from invited lectures given at the conference, are a fitting tribute to the originality, depth and influence of Howe''s mathematical work. The range and diversity of the topics will appeal to a broad audience of research mathematicians and graduate students interested in symmetry and its profound applications. Sample Chapter(s). Foreword (21 KB). Chapter 1: The Theta Correspondence Over R (342 KB). Contents: The Theta ...
The present volume gathers contributions to the conference Microlocal and Time-Frequency Analysis 2018 (MLTFA18), which was held at Torino University from the 2nd to the 6th of July 2018. The event was organized in honor of Professor Luigi Rodino on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The conference’s focus and the contents of the papers reflect Luigi’s various research interests in the course of his long and extremely prolific career at Torino University.
The first of a two volume set on novel methods in harmonic analysis, this book draws on a number of original research and survey papers from well-known specialists detailing the latest innovations and recently discovered links between various fields. Along with many deep theoretical results, these volumes contain numerous applications to problems in signal processing, medical imaging, geodesy, statistics, and data science. The chapters within cover an impressive range of ideas from both traditional and modern harmonic analysis, such as: the Fourier transform, Shannon sampling, frames, wavelets, functions on Euclidean spaces, analysis on function spaces of Riemannian and sub-Riemannian manifo...
This collection of merchant documents is essential reading for any student of economic developments in the Middle Ages who wishes to go beyond the level of textbook summaries. Different aspects of economic life in the Mediterranean world are delineated in the light of a rich variety of articles and other contemporary writings, drawn from Muslim and Christian sources. From commercial contracts, promissory notes, and judicial acts to working manuals of practical geography and philology, this volume of documents provides an unparalleled portrait of the world of medieval commerce.
This is one of the first books presenting stabilizability of nonlinear systems in a well-organized and detailed way, the problem, its motivation, features and results. Control systems defined by ordinary differential equations are dealt with. Many worked examples have been included. The main focus is on the mathematical aspects of the problem, but some important applications are also described. This book will be suitable as a textbook for advanced university courses, and also as a tool for control theorists and researchers. An extensive list of references is included.
