Extractive Bargains
This book is the first to focus on state-led ‘extractive bargains,’ designed to reach a social consensus on the extent of extractive activities, how they should be governed and their negative consequences mitigated. These state-led ‘bargains’ have taken a number of different forms and offer varying degrees of promise in meeting environmental and social concerns. The book critically examines ‘bargains’ in states across the Global North and the Global South, incorporates Indigenous issues, and judiciously assesses their prospects for promoting long-term sustainability. It focusses on mineral and fossil fuel extraction in particular including bargains designed to govern the former as the demand for minerals used in “green energy” increases and to limit the use of the latter. The book will be of interest to students and researchers of global studies, global political economy, political science, political sociology, sustainability, environmental sociology, development studies and geography. Crisis de estatalidad y violaciones a derechos humanos
¿Cuál es la relación existente entre las capacidades estatales y las violaciones a derechos humanos? Este libro da respuesta a esa pregunta a partir del análisis de las distintas expresiones del Estado para saber cómo funciona cada una de ellas y cómo garantizan o violentan derechos en el marco del contexto de violencia e impunidad que actualmente aqueja a México. Para ello, se examinan las acciones estatales en problemas pertinentes de derechos humanos para el país, como la migración, los derechos de periodistas, la desaparición de personas, las instituciones de justicia, los derechos sociales y los derechos laborales, haciéndonos ver que los derechos humanos son algo más que normas jurídicas, que además representan relaciones de poder, relaciones internacionales, discursos, identidades, políticas públicas. El panorama final expone una crisis de estatalidad cuando se trata del respeto y garantía de los derechos humanos, pero también identifica posibles rutas de intervención.

Return to Sender is an anthropological account of how Peruvian emigrants raise and remit money and what that activity means for themselves and for their home communities. The book draws on first-hand ethnographic data from North and South America, Europe, and Japan to describe how Peruvians remit to relatives at home, collectively raise money to organize development projects in their regions of origin, and invest savings in business and other activities. Karsten Paerregaard challenges unqualified approval of remittances as beneficial resources of development for home communities and important income for home countries. He finds a more complex situation in which remittances can also create dependency and deprivation.

Una estimulante y oportuna discusión en torno a los impactos del cuerpo normativo e institucional y de la actual política migratoria sobre los derechos de los migrantes en México.
