Virginia saw significant action during the War of 1812, from the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair to the defense of Norfolk against British invaders. Many Virginians supported the struggle for independence from Great Britain--others vehemently opposed "Mr. Madison's War." A largely forgotten conflict, the war played an important role in the history of the United States. While comprehensive histories of the war are few, there is a positive lack of state-focused studies. Drawing on extensive primary and secondary sources, the author provides an in-depth portrait of the "Old Dominion" at war in the early years of the nation's history.
This book reveals the ways in which those responsible for creating Britain's nineteenth-century empire sought to make colonization compatible with humanitarianism.
"In the mid-1950s Robert Rauschenberg began making what he called "Combines"--Radically experimental works that mix paint and other art materials with things found in daily life. These hybrid creations offered a dramatic counterpoint to the gestural abstraction that prevailed in contemporary American painting. Canyon (1959), one of the artist's best-known Combines, is a large canvas bearing paint, a postcard, a man's shirt, photographs, newspaper clippings, wood, a flattened metal can and paint tube, a piece of glass, and, thrusting out from its surface, a stuffed bald eagle. Leah Dickerman's essay examines the genesis of this startling and enigmatic work and positions it within a key period in Rauschenberg's groundbreaking career."--Publisher's description.
Lake Issyk-Kul is a closed lake located in the Tien Shan mountain belt of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan. It is the world's fifth deepest lake (668 m) and the second largest high altitude lake in the world (1607 m above sea level). The lake is affected by several environmental threats of both anthropogenic and natural origin: decline of the lake level resulting in progressively increasing salinity, incomplete vertical water exchange, and risk of contamination by past and present industrial activity. Although the lake has been intensively studied, the information is only available in unpublished reports or local scientific journals. This book presents for the first time to an international audience the main physical, chemical, biological and geological characteristics of the lake, the fruits of many years of observations, complemented by recent results of international projects. Case studies of similar problems in other parts of the world are presented, together with ethical aspects of the environmental protection of the lake.
Hazardous pollutants are a growing concern in treatment engineering. In the past, biological treatment was mainly used for the removal of bulk organic matter and the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorous. However, relatively recently the issue of hazardous pollutants, which are present at very low concentrations in wastewaters and waters but are very harmful to both ecosystems and humans, is becoming increasingly important. Today, treatment of hazardous pollutants in the water environment becomes a challenge as the water quality standards become stricter. Hazardous Pollutants in Biological Treatment Systems focuses entirely on hazardous pollutants in biological treatment and gives an elaborate ...
