Among the many forms of cancer treatment, chemotherapy remains an important part of the arsenal in which Navelbine and Taxotere play a major role. These medicines result from molecules discovered by French researchers of the Institut de Chimie des Substances Naturelles (ICSN) of the CNRS, directed by Pierre Potier. By recounting this history, the authors of this book attempt to illustrate how the work of themselves and others, united in a community, has helped obtain these results. After having explained the strategy of the French policy makers to promote the French chemistry of natural substances, the authors explore how the academic efforts in this field have evolved, and the alignment betw...

In Vivo Immunology

The 11th International Conference on Lymphoid Tissues and Immune Reactions was held in Spa-Liege (Belgium), from 4 to 8 July 1993. The regular devotees refer to these conferences as the "Germinal Centre Conferences or GCC". In the 1960s, the germinal centres were the subject of such considerable study and speculation that a group of dynamic people decided to devote an international conference centered on that topic. This led to the fIrst GCC organized in Bern in 1966. Following the success of this initial meeting, further sessions have been organized at regular intervals and, over the years, the scope of the GCC has been broadened. Nowadays, the GCC conferences are dedicated to in vivo immun...

The discipline of neuroimmunomodulation is devoted to interactions between the immune nervous systems at all levels and includes observation on brain, pituitary, peripheral nervous system and immune cells. Nitric oxide synthase is contained within neurons in the brain and modifies behavioural and hormonal responses by acting on other neurons and on release of peptides and other transmitters through activation of guanylate cyclase and cyclooxygenase. Increases in this and in expression of proinflammatory cytokines can contribute to damage in patients with multiple sclerosis, Parkinsonism, meningitis, stroke, and Alzheimer's disease.

Lymphatic Tissues and in Vivo Immune Responses

Proceedings of the Tenth International Conference on Lymphatic Tissues and Germinal Centres in Immune Reactions, called the 10th Germinal Centre Conference (GCC), held in Compiegne, France, July 1990. Contributions explain many details on the molecular level of what has been described as immunologic"
