Staging and the Arts in Nineteenth-Century France
This book discusses the mechanisms and patterns of staging in nineteenth-century France. Often associated with theatre and performance, staging also applies to visual arts. It is thoroughly embedded in a more general cultural development comprising the dissemination of knowledge, political awareness and consumerism. The notion of staging applies to a process of appearing, revealing and disappearing that puts forward new ways for the individual to be seen and to make the self (and the other) visible. Staging determines and questions the process of appearing and disappearing by generating connections and interactions between multiple layers of reality (i.e., artistic, theatrical, literary, and visual) – but according to what criteria, through what mechanisms and with what materials? What are the repercussions of staging, and, even more important, what does staging not show? This book argues that the notion of staging goes beyond interdisciplinarity. Looking at the different ways staging was used and conceived introduces new approaches to understanding visual culture in nineteenth-century France.
Metaphor and Translation
This volume brings together the ideas put forward at an international conference on Metaphor and Translation held at the University of Toulon, France, in June 2017. The bilingual nature of the contributions here provides an insight into recent linguistic theories from both the English- and French-speaking worlds. This diversified approach is further enhanced by contributors being based in a large number of countries worldwide and working on different language combinations. The kinds of problem areas investigated here include a wide range of themes. They cover aspects ranging from methodological and theoretical issues to specialist areas such as literature, culture and the economy. Les Vestins à l'époque tardo-républicaine. Du nord-osque au latin
En Italie centro-méridionale, la domination romaine se met en place au début du IIIe siècle avant notre ère. Chez les Vestins, la langue parlée et écrite est alors un dialecte osque. Près de trois siècles plus tard, sous Auguste, le latin devient la seule langue attestée. Il y a eu latinisation : la langue indigène a été remplacée par le latin, dans un nombre croissant de contextes. Nous étudions ici les facteurs et les modalités de ce processus socio-linguistique, à partir de la documentation littéraire, archéologique et épigraphique subsistante. Les Vestins n'ont pas considéré leur langue comme une composante de la représentation qu'ils se faisaient d'eux-mêmes : leurs élites qui disposaient des usages publics et privés de l'écriture, du moins de ceux qui sont attestés, étaient toutes disposées à y renoncer.
