Image and Ornament in the Early Medieval West
Scholarship often treats the post-Roman art produced in central and north-western Europe as representative of the pagan identities of the new 'Germanic' rulers of the early medieval world. In this book, Matthias Friedrich offers a critical reevaluation of the ethnic and religious categories of art that still inform our understanding of early medieval art and archaeology. He scrutinises early medieval visual culture by combining archaeological approaches with art historical methods based on contemporary theory. Friedrich examines the transformation of Roman imperial images, together with the contemporary, highly ornamented material culture that is epitomized by 'animal art.' Through a rigorous analysis of a range of objects, he demonstrates how these pathways produced an aesthetic that promoted variety (varietas), a cross-cultural concept that bridged the various ethnic and religious identities of post-Roman Europe and the Mediterranean worlds.

This book's objective, based on interdisciplinary research, is therefore to describe and present the structure of mining and metallurgical areas in the kingdom of Bohemia, as well as to examine and identify how ore mining and metallurgy shaped and interacted with settlement organization and the medieval landscape.

Seit dem ersten Heft im April 1978 ist Geschichte in Köln ein wichtiges Forum für Themen der Stadt- und Regionalgeschichte, das sowohl die Fachöffentlichkeit als auch ein historisch interessiertes Publikum anspricht. Ouvrage qui accompagne l'exposition "A l'Est, du nouveau !" présentée au musée archéologique de Strasbourg, du 25 octobre 2013 au 31 décembre 2014.00L’archéologie des conflits contemporains, et tout spécialement du premier conflit mondial de 1914 à 1918, est une branche très novatrice de l’archéologie, qui ouvre de nombreuses perspectives pour la recherche historique et renouvelle la compréhension de la vie quotidienne des combattants sur les lignes de front. Des résultats très importants ont été obtenus en Alsace et en Lorraine au cours de la dernière décennie, en particulier à l’occasion d’opérations archéologiques menées sur des positions fortifiées, par exemple les sites récemment explorés de Geispolsheim/Schwobenfeld dans le Bas-Rhin ou de Carspach/Kilianstollen dans le Haut-Rhin.

EL SOLDADO ROMANO Y LA FAMILIA
La vida privada de los soldados romanos sigue siendo un tema bastante desatendido en las investigaciones sobre el ejército romano. Son pocas las fuentes clásicas -esas narraciones en prosa que consideramos «literatura histórica»- que hacen referencia a ella, aunque sí se encuentran a menudo alusiones a soldados y sus relaciones familiares en otro tipo de documentos. Así, podemos contemplar en las tumbas de soldados bastantes representaciones del soldado junto a su esposa o hijos, donde a veces no falta la imagen de un liberto o un esclavo. A las relaciones entre estos personajes aluden las propias fórmulas epigráficas. También en los papiros y en las tabulae caeratae encontramos noticias interesantes sobre la vida privada de los soldados, y nos ayudan comprender parcialmente la «biografía» de estos profesionales de las armas. En este libro se presenta un conjunto de estudios académicos que plantean diversos aspectos de la coexistencia de la vida militar y de la vida civil del soldado.
