This book analyzes, in the relation with the Romanian modernity, the transformations of the Romanian public sphere, political system and journalism from the beginning of the 19th Century up to 2005. The argumentation starts from the idea that the Romanian Enlightenment never had the chance to reach its purpose, the creation of the individual as a human category. As a consequence of this historical fact, the Romanian modernity was not explored in all its dimensions and was not congruent with its western model of development. Only after late 90's, signs for a surpassing historical backwardness were seen in Romania, and only after the integration into EU become sure. From this perspective this ...
The "Pigs' Slaughter" is the story of how the events during the run-up to Christmas Day 1989 changed a family and nation forever. It skillfully reveals how beneath the drunken joy of the Romanian Revolution lies the true story of the deception of a nation and the world. The story is told from the point of view of a 14 year old boy in a small Transylvanian town, destined to become a journalist and learn the inside stories, whose hindsight and flashforwards reveal to the reader the truth, of which most of the story's protagonists are painfully unaware. In a story that seamlessly weaves in relevant references to World War One and Two, the French Revolution, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and even Vlad the Impaler (the inspiration for Dracula's character), is revealed an inside description of how the Eastern Block, locked behind the Iron Curtain, was finally dismantled. --page 4 of cover
As a direct result of an international conference organized in the year 2021, the volume tries to shed light on the way in which the translation activity contributed to the Romanian culture and language, drawing from different traditions and cultures it came in contact with (directly or indirectly), and thus mingling the own Slavonic church tradition with the new and revolutionary ideas of the Western world and using this mix to modernise the society, language and the politics in this region. Furthermore, this eclectic collection of articles highlights the fact that it was neither the exclusive merit of the Transylvanian scholars, nor of the Moldavian or Wallachian ones to have contributed d...

„Murasaki Shikibu urmăreşte intrigile erotice, urzelile de la Curte, căsătoriile politice, vârtejul de ușurătăți și lingușeli din jurul ei cu privirea atentă, uneori ironică, a unei Jane Austen” (The New Yorker). Volumul este însoțit de ilustrații în formă de evantaie rotunde, reprezentând momente din viața lui Genji și scene de la curtea imperială în Epoca Heian.

The events of September 11 and the subsequent war on terrorism have provoked widespread discussion about the possibility of democracy in the Islamic world. Such topics as the meaning of jihad, the role of clerics as authoritative interpreters, and the place of human rights and toleration in Islam have become subjects of urgent public debate around the world. With few exceptions, however, this debate has proceeded in isolation from the vibrant traditions of argument within Islamic theology, philosophy, and law. Islam and the Challenge of Democracy aims to correct this deficiency. The book engages the reader in a rich discourse on the challenges of democracy in contemporary Islam. The collecti...
This Handbook offers an analysis of the relation between football and politics, based on over 30 case studies covering five continents. It provides a detailed picture of this relation in a wide number of European, American, African, and Asian states, as well as a comparative assessment of football in a global perspective, thus combining the general and the local. It examines themes such as the political origins of football in the studied country, the historical club rivalries, the political aspects of football as a sports spectacle, and the contemporary issues linked to the political use of football. By following the same structure with each study, the volume allows for the comparison between largely investigated cases and cases that have seldom been addressed. The Handbook will be of use particularly to students and scholars in the fields of sport studies, political science and sociology, as well as cultural studies, anthropology and leisure studies.
