Metal Foams

This book offers the first full-scale technical treatment of an important class of engineered porous materials: metal foams. Written by a team of metal foam experts from around the world, the volume offers new, as well as fundamental, information on all aspects of metal foams, including their theory, manufacture, structure-property relationships and applications. The book explains microscopy and modeling tools that enhance the prediction and determination of metal foam properties related to fluid flow, heat transfer, sound absorption and failure analysis. Attention is given to the many techniques for manufacturing and testing metal foams and to how their microstructure can be controlled to create custom properties for applications in acoustics, bone implants, heat sinks, lightweighting and crash protection. The text is sufficiently detailed to offer guidance to design and development engineers, and yet is basic enough to be used as a textbook or reference by students of materials science, mechanical, structural or chemical engineering requiring an introduction to the subject.

Metal foams are at the forefront of technological development for the automotive, aerospace, and other weight-dependent industries. They are formed by various methods, but the key facet of their manufacture is the inclusion of air or other gaseous pockets in the metal structure. The fact that gas pockets are present in their structure provides an obvious weight advantage over traditionally cast or machined solid metal components. The unique structure of metal foams also opens up more opportunities to improve on more complex methods of producing parts with space inclusions such as sand-casting. This guide provides information on the advantages metal foams possess, and the applications for which they may prove suitable. Offers a concise description of metal foams, their manufacture, and their advantages in industry Provides engineers with answers to pertinent questions surrounding metal foams Satisfies a major need in the market for information on the properties, performance, and applications of these materials

Mechanical Behavior of Foamed Materials Under Dynamic Compression

Dynamic compressive stress-strain data of several polymer foams obtained from uniaxial compressive tests over a wide range of loading rates are presented. For the tests with lower loading rates, an electro- hydraulically operated tester was used, while the higher rate test data were obtained by a gravity-operated drop tester. It is shown that the isothermal, uniaxial dynamic compressive stress-strain behavior of the foams tested can be described by a constitutive equation which is a power law in the strain rate. Exploratory uniaxial compressive data of an open-cell foam showing the air flow effect are also presented. (Author, modified-PL).

Handbook of Plastic Foams

  • Type: Book

  • Published: 1995-12-31

  • Publisher: Elsevier

This book is intended to be a source of practical information on all types of plastic foams (cellular plastics) in use, including the new structural plastic foams. Elastomer (rubber-like) foams are also considered. The book is intended primarily for those who require a non-theoretical, authoritative, easy-to-use handbook in the subject area. It should be of value to materials engineers, plastics fabricators, chemists, chemical engineers and students. Recognized authorities have written several chapters and parts of chapters in their fields of expertise. The book is organized in such a way that information on a desired subject can be found rapidly. An unusual feature is a comprehensive listing of all known standardization documents (test methods, practices, and specifications), including some international standards. Each document includes a brief description of its contents.

Foaming of polymeric materials enables weight reduction, which is very important from the economic point of view, but most of all, it should be considered as an excellent means to provide new properties to various polymeric materials. Permanent developments in foaming technologies allow manufacturing of foams with micro- and even nano-sized pores, expanding the already very wide range of their applications. Except for the most conventional applications, which include damping materials, thermal and acoustic insulation, packaging materials or absorbents, applications in catalysis, fuel cells, tissue engineering, and electromagnetic shielding, often associated with nanocellular structures, have...

Foamed Plastics and Other Selected Insulating Materials. a Literature Survey

  • Type: Book

  • Published: 1961

  • Publisher: Unknown

The report summarizes a literature survey of foamed, thermal insulating materials and recommends future laboratory investigations. It presents information about thermal insulation properties and applications of foamed materials including plastic, rubber, glass, and concrete. Pertinent data from commercial manufacturers' brochures and other available literature is also summarized. Foamed materials have been used extensively for thermal insulation in both the high and low temperature fields, but the survey revealed that, while many proprietary foamed products exist, little information other than that provided by the manufacturers is available about their properties.
