Masculinities

  • Categories: Art

Examining increasingly fluid notions of masculinity over the past six decades, this book offers a culturally diverse collection of work from some of the world's most celebrated photographers. This photographic exploration draws together the work of approximately fifty artists of different ethnicities, generations, and gender identities to look at how ideas of masculinity have evolved since the 1960s. Each of its six themed chapters features bold and arresting work by artists such as Richard Avedon, John Coplans, Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, Collier Schorr, Larry Sultan, Wolfgang Tillmans, and David Wojnarowicz, who are all renowned for their depictions of masculinity and its tropes. Othe...

In ?Margins of Excess? the notion of how personal imagination conflicts with generally accepted beliefs is expressed through the narratives of six individuals. Every one of them momentarily received nationwide attention in the US press because of their attempts to realize a dream or passion, but were presented as frauds or deceivers by the mass media?s apparent incapacity to deal with idiosyncratic versions of reality.0The current era of ?post-truth?, in which truths, half-truths, lies, fiction or entertainment are easily interchanged, has produced a culture of ?hyper-individual truths?, demanding a new approach to identify the underlying narratives that structure our perception of reality in a world where there is no longer a generally accepted frame of realism. 0Embedding the stories of the six main protagonists into a clustering tale of cloned military dogs, religious apparitions, suspect vehicles, fake terrorist plots, accidental bombings and fictional presidents, this book follows an associative logic akin to the indiscriminate way a paranoid mind connects unrelated events, or the hysteria of the 24-second news cycle.

"Colorblind Sands is a project for a journey, a reflection upon photography and the great American road trip. It explores the semantics of color, the experience of time and place, and the possibilities for analog printing in the darkroom. Colorblind Sands is a fictitious road trip that Reuzé has yet to make. An imaginary journey through the history of American photography"--Publisher's website.

Belgian Solutions

-300 new photos of absurd (and sometimes hilarious) solutions for everyday problems The Brussels-based artist David Helbich started -Belgian Solutions- in 2006. He made photos of the peculiar (and comical) no-nonsense solutions to problems that that he spotted in his daily surroundings. Once he started to share his photos online on Facebook in 2008 (the Belgian Solutions page has over 25,000 fans), the project gathered speed, with contributions by 'Belgian Solutions' spotters all over the world. And because Helbich keeps receiving pictures, he keeps creating content - much to the joy of his fans.

Radical Futurisms

  • Categories: Art

What comes after end-of-world narratives: visions of just futurity and multispecies flourishing. There is widespread consensus that we are living at the end—of democracy, of liberalism, of capitalism, of a healthy planet, of the Holocene, of civilization as we know it. Drawing on radical futurisms and visions of justice-to-come emerging from the traditions of the oppressed—Indigenous, African-American, multispecies, anti-capitalist—as materialized in experimental visual cultural, new media, aesthetic practices, and social movements, in this book. T. J. Demos poses speculative questions about what comes after end-of-world narratives, arguing that it's as vital to defeat fatalistic nihilism as the false solutions of green capitalism and algorithmic governance. How might we decolonize the future, and cultivate an emancipated chronopolitics in relation to an undetermined not-yet? If we are to avoid climate emergency's cooptation by technofixes, and the defuturing of multitudes by xenophobic eco-fascism, Demos argues, we must cultivate visions of just futurity and multispecies flourishing.

This ambitious but utopian project by Dutch photographer Paul Kooiker reads like a sampler of genres: landscape, nude, still life, and so on. To achieve this, he often employs clichés reminiscent of the propaganda of travel brochures or religious and political rhetoric in the media. Kooiker allows the personal to creep into his work in this 'encyclopaedia of life': a collection of 164 images in which intimate private photographs break through the seemingly objective approach, allowing public and private space to bleed into each other. The result is a large, single work wherein the complexities of things converge, from the medium of photography to life and death, and to the artist himself. Exhibition: FOMU, Photography Museum, Antwerp, Belgium (29.06.-07.10.2018).
