This contributed volume explores how data mining, machine learning, and similar statistical techniques can analyze the types of problems arising from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) research. The book focuses on the study of clinical data and the analysis of herbal data. Challenges addressed include diagnosis, prescription analysis, ingredient discoveries, network based mechanism deciphering, pattern-activity relationships, and medical informatics. Each author demonstrates how they made use of machine learning, data mining, statistics and other analytic techniques to resolve their research challenges, how successful if these techniques were applied, any insight noted and how these insight...
This book concerns modern methods in scientific computing and linear algebra, relevant to image and signal processing. For these applications, it is important to consider ingredients such as: (1) sophisticated mathematical models of the problems, including a priori knowledge, (2) rigorous mathematical theories to understand the difficulties of solving problems which are ill-posed, and (3) fast algorithms for either real-time or data-massive computations. Such are the topics brought into focus by these proceedings of the Workshop on Scientific Computing (held in Hong Kong on March 10-12, 1997, the sixth in such series of Workshops held in Hong Kong since 1990), where the major themes were on numerical linear algebra, signal processing, and image processing.
Wavelet Transformations and Their Applications in Chemistry pioneers a new approach to classifying existing chemometric techniques for data analysis in one and two dimensions, using a practical applications approach to illustrating chemical examples and problems. Written in a simple, balanced, applications-based style, the book is geared to both theorists and non-mathematicians. This text emphasizes practical applications in chemistry. It employs straightforward language and examples to show the power of wavelet transforms without overwhelming mathematics, reviews other methods, and compares wavelets with other techniques that provide similar capabilities. It uses examples illustrated in MATLAB codes to assist chemists in developing applications, and includes access to a supplementary Web site providing code and data sets for work examples. Wavelet Transformations and Their Applications in Chemistry will prove essential to professionals and students working in analytical chemistry and process chemistry, as well as physical chemistry, spectroscopy, and statistics.
This book presents the state of integration of wavelet theory and multiresolution analysis into soft computing. It is the first book on hybrid methods combining wavelet analysis with fuzzy logic, neural networks or genetic algorithms. Much attention is given to new approaches (fuzzy-wavelet) that permit one to develop, using wavelet techniques, linguistically interpretable fuzzy systems from data. The book also introduces the reader to wavelet-based genetic algorithms and multiresolution search. A special place is given to methods that have been implemented in real world applications, particularly the different techniques combining fuzzy logic or neural networks with wavelet theory. Contents: Introduction to Wavelet Theory; Pre-Processing: The Multiresolution Approach; Spline-Based Wavelets Approximation and Compression Algorithms; Automatic Generation of a Fuzzy System with Wavelet Based Methods; On-Line Learning; Nonparametric Wavelet-Based Estimation and Regression Techniques; Developing Intelligent Products; Genetic Algorithms and Multiresolution. Readership: Graduate students, researchers, academics/lecturers and industrialists in fuzzy logic.
Wavelets seem to be the most efficient tool in signal denoising and compression. They can be used in an unlimited number of applications in all fields of chemistry where the instrumental signals are the source of information about the studied chemical systems or phenomena, and in all cases where these signals have to be archived. The quality of the instrumental signals determines the quality of answer to the basic analytical questions: how many components are in the studied systems, what are these components like and what are their concentrations? Efficient compression of the signal sets can drastically speed up further processing such as data visualization, modelling (calibration and patter...
