Originally published in 1992. At its foundation FAO was conceived as an organization that would bring together health and agriculture. It would manage the world’s food output to greater advantage and improve the well-being of its people. Almost a half-century on, FAO faced mounting criticism from its major funding nations, professionals within the field, and developing countries. The efficacy of its constitution, bureaucracy and aid, and even its fidelity to original ideals are questioned. This book presents an informed, if irreverent, insider’s view. The first part of the book sets out the structure and activities of FAO. It gives a human dimension, describing the personalities that have influenced decisions and performance, the motivations of its staff, its location in Rome. The second part appraises FAO’S success in achieving its ultimate objective the alleviation of poverty. Throughout, the concern is both for a more visionary organization to help develop a sustainable income base for the rural poor in the developing world.
Proceedings of the FAO International Symposium on the Role of Agricultural Biotechnologies in Sustainable Food Systems and Nutrition
The FAO international symposium on “The role of agricultural biotechnologies in sustainable food systems and nutrition” took place from 15 to 17 February 2016 at FAO headquarters, Rome. Over 400 people attended, including 230 delegates from 75 member countries and the European Union, as well as representatives of intergovernmental organizations, private sector entities, civil society organizations, academia/research organizations and producer organizations/cooperatives. Pilot project on the implementation of the OECD-FAO Guidance for Responsible Agricultural Supply Chains - Final Report
This final report presents the key findings of the pilot project for testing the practical application of the OECD-FAO Guidance. It includes progress made over the pilot timeline, and summarizes the key lessons learned, good practices and challenges highlighted through the activities implemented with pilot participants throughout the duration of the pilot project. It provides conclusions and recommendations for various categories of staekholders.
OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2021–2030
The Agricultural Outlook 2021-2030 is a collaborative effort of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. It brings together the commodity, policy and country expertise of both organisations as well as input from collaborating member countries to provide an annual assessment of the prospects for the coming decade of national, regional and global agricultural commodity markets. The publication consists of 11 Chapters; Chapter 1 covers agricultural and food markets; Chapter 2 provides regional outlooks and the remaining chapters are dedicated to individual commodities.
Strengthening the enabling environment for responsible investment in agriculture and food systems – Evidence from Liberia
Under its CFS RAI Umbrella Programme, FAO is strengthening the capacities of Liberian state and non-state actors to enhance the enabling environment for responsible investment in agriculture and food systems. This includes the present baseline study, drafted by ZOA with support from FAO; the delivery of blended learning programmes for policymakers; capacity development activities for civil society; and multi-stakeholder policy dialogue which is expected to result in concrete policy recommendations. These activities are carried out under the inter-regional project “Enhancing the enabling environment for responsible investment in agriculture and food systems” (GCP/INT/920/GER), which is funded by Germany. The project operates at global, regional, and country levels (Lao PDR, Liberia, and Sierra Leone).
Water for sustainable food and agriculture
This report first provides an outlook for the agricultural and food market and highlights the challenges that population trends, rising global incomes and climate change present to agriculture and water. The following section focuses on two broad areas that require attention and presents recommendations on: (i) policies within the agricultural domain that apply specifically to the sector, such as water supply enhancement, water loss reduction, crop productivity, water re-allocation, and options for rainfed agriculture; and (ii) actions within the water domain that relate to water management for all sectors, not only agriculture.
Ten years of FAO experience on ending child labour in agriculture in Africa
This compendium is the result of a first-of-its-kind stocktaking exercise looking at FAO activities to address child labour in agriculture in Malawi, Mali, Uganda, the Niger and the United Republic of Tanzania over a decade (2010–2020). It is intended to make a practical contribution to the field of child labour elimination in agriculture, by shedding a light on some of the FAO-supported activities, country processes and practices as well as achievements, and lessons learned. As such, it highlights the general main lessons learned and key messages, outlines and provide details on country processes and related outcomes and achievements on knowledge generation, capacity development, awareness raising, policy advice and promotion of advocacy and partnerships. The contents on these FAO strategies for the elimination of child labour in agriculture are complemented by examples of areas of work such as promoting safe practices and labour-saving technologies and empowering and building the skills of youth aged 15–17 by facilitating school-to-work transition in agriculture.

The FAO Migration Framework guides the Organization in carrying out its work on migration at global, regional and country levels. It aims to ensure greater coordination between technical units and decentralized offices, and strengthen coherence and synergies across the Organization.
