The contributions of forests to the well-being of humankind are far-reaching. Forests provide vital wood supplies, help to combat rural poverty, and ensure food security and decent livelihoods; they offer promising mid-term green growth opportunities; and they deliver vital long-term environmental services, such as clean air and water, biodiversity and mitigation of climate change. Building on data that are more comprehensive and reliable than ever before and covering 234 countries and territories, the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2015 (FRA 2015) shows encouraging signs of improved forest management and a global slowdown in deforestation. However, these trends need to be strengthened, especially in countries that are lagging behind.
Near East and North Africa Regional Forest Resource Assessment 2020
The current report was compiled by the FAO Regional Office for Near East and North Africa (NENA) and is aimed at providing member countries with a source of reliable and timely data on the status of forest resources in the region and supporting them in their evidence-based decision-making and planning for the development of the forestry sector. Most of the NENA region falls within the subtropical climatic domain, but it spans an area that ranges from a tropical climatic domain in Mauritania, the Sudan and Yemen to a temperate domain in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Training manual on forests and trees for food security and nutrition
Currently in Tanzania, training institutions for professionals in cross-cutting sectors such as forestry and agriculture do not adequately capture the role of forest and tree resources for food security and nutrition, leading to dependency on one sector – agriculture – to cater for food and nutrition diversity. This undervalues the fundamental role of forest ecosystem services for sustainable agriculture by regulating water flows, stabilizing soils, maintaining soil fertility, regulating the climate, and providing habitat for wild pollinators and predators of agricultural pests. Society, economy and forests: The unfolding forest transition in China and the lessons for the future
The paper provides a comprehensive assessment of the changes witnessed in the forest sector in China during the last three decades and the key drivers that have contributed to the country’s forest transition. Clearly, such a transition is an outcome of the convergence of several factors, including the emergence of China as an industrial economy, clear and consistent policies, tenure reforms, investment in key forestry programmes, and strengthening science and technology capabilities. The paper also provides an indication of the emerging challenges, including the larger uncertainties stemming from inward-looking policies and the outbreak of global pandemics and crises. This study on forest transition in China will provide valuable insights into what is required to build and sustainably manage forest capital in order to meet the needs and aspirations of all stakeholders, whether global, national or local.
Assessment of forest data availability and related technical capacity needs in West Africa
This forest data assessment was conducted as part of the five-year Global Transformation of Forests for People and Climate: a focus on West Africa project, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). This document aims to provide quality data to support decision-making and sustainable management of forest and land resources at both national and subregional levels. It also seeks to develop processes that could be replicated in other subregions within Africa and outside the region. This document is one of the outputs of the project and provides information on existing forest data in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) countries, critical information gaps on forest condition and land use and land cover dynamics, and capacity development needs.

Final evaluation of “Strengthening national policy and knowledge framework in support of sustainable management of Brazil’s forest resources”
The sustainable utilization of natural resources is a major element of rural livelihoods and economic development in Brazil. From 2011 to 2019, FAO implemented the project “Strengthening the national knowledge and information framework to foster sustainable forest resources management policies". This project helped to establish and consolidate a National Forest Inventory (NFI) model approved by, and agreed with, different partners and stakeholders in the forest sector. The focus given to institutional strengthening and data collection was strategic to achieve an unprecedented level of qualified knowledge on the topic. To date, there is some evidence on the use of NFI results for policymaking, promotion of sustainable management of forest resources, and biodiversity conservation. NFI results were also used in international forums and documents such as Global Forest Resources Assessments (FRA) 2020.
