Experiences of War in Europe and the Americas, 1792–1815
This work seeks to offer a new way of viewing the French Wars of 1792–1815. Most studies of this period offer international, political, and military analyses using the French Revolution and Napoleon as the prime mover. But this book focuses on military and civilian responses to French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, throughout the rest of Europe and the Americas. It shows how the unprecedented mobilization of this era forged a generation of soldiers and civilians sharing a common experience of suffering, bequeathing the West with a new veteran sensibility. Using a range of sources, especially memoirs, this book reveals the adventure and suffering confronting ordinary soldiers campaigning in Europe and the Americas, and the burdens imposed on civilians enduring rising and falling empires across the West. It also reveals how the wars liberated slaves, serfs, and common people through revolutions and insurgencies.

La palabra alemana actual para viaje «Reise», significaba en alemán medieval expedición guerrera. De ésta nota etimológica se pueden extraer ideas para lanzar una ojeada a dos fenómenos muy dispares; la guerra como viaje hacia el terreno enemigo o el espacio para conquistar, así como los viajes forzosos en las poblaciones afectadas, los exilios. Esta edición recopila las actas del Congreso Internacional Guerra y Viaje. Una constante Histórico-literaria entre España y Alemania, celebrado en el MuVIM en 2008. Se trata de catorce trabajos centrados en las relaciones culturales hispano-alemanas, desde la Edad Media hasta el siglo XX. En els últims anys s'ha experimentat, a més, un gir que desplaça cada vegada més l'atenció cap al segle XX. Centrades en l'estudi dels discursos i les pràctiques de nació en el segle XX, es pot constatar a través de les diverses aportacions la complexitat d'aquests discursos i aquestes pràctiques, i també la necessitat de fixar l'atenció en aspectes poc estudiats. Xenophobia and Nativism in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean
This book historicises and analyses the increasing incidence of xenophobia and nativism in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. It examines how xenophobia and nativism impact the political cohesion and social fabric of states and societies in the regions and offers solutions to aid policy formation and implementation. Rather than utilising an overarching framework, individual theory is applied to chapters to analyse the diverse connections between xenophobia and nativism in the regions. The book explores the economic, nationalistic, political, social, cultural, and psychological triggers for xenophobia and nativism and their impact on an increasingly interconnected and interrelated world. In addition to the individual and comparative examination of these triggers, the book outlines how they can be decreased or altered and argues that Pan-Africanism and the unity of purpose among diverse groups in the western hemisphere is still an ideal to which Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean can aspire. Vicente González Arnao
Vicente González Arnao es uno de los intelectuales más sobresalientes de la primera mitad del XIX, a pesar de que resulta un desconocido para la mayor parte de los historiadores del periodo. Eximio teórico del derecho, pero fundamentalmente un gestor de amplia experiencia y formación, desempeñó importantes cargos en la sociedad madrileña. La coyuntura bélica de 1808 marcó definitivamente su biografía. Parlamentario en Bayona, consejero de José I, ilustre abogado en París, retorna a España en 1831 para formar parte del selecto grupo de reformadores que en los últimos años de Fernando VII sentaron las bases de la reforma política que se puso en ejecución en la década siguiente.
