From "Whisky Galore" and "Edge of the World" to "Local Hero" and "Highlander", Scotland has been presented on film in various degrees of reality by both Hollywood and British film-makers. This book gives an illustrated analysis of the myth and reality in Scottish films over the last 60 years. It surveys and summarizes each film in chronological order and places it in historical context. Production details of the more important films are discussed and the difficulties of funding in Britain are outlined. The book also examines the whole problem of presenting a realistic and recognizable picture of national life and achievement in Scotland.
John Grierson
This book places Grierson's work with the GPO film unit, the National Film Board of Canada, UNESCO and Scottish Television in the context of a full life which began in 1898 in the home of a country headmaster in Scotland and included service in World War One and education in Glasgow University. The author knew Grierson from 1930 and assesses his contribution to cinema and the art of communication.

To answer this question, the main influences on the depiction of Scotland will be described. The third chapter will subsequently end by describing how the Scots themselves wanted to depict their country and culture. In presenting famous films and musicals in the final chapter, dualities of Edinburgh and Scotland and their stimulus for productions in and around Scotland shall be depicted.
