The Father's Will

Drawing on philosophical analysis and historical-critical exegesis, this study sets out to clarify the Father's will for Christ and how it relates to his death on the cross. Then, after considering the theologies of Anselm and Peter Abelard, it argues for the recovery of the early Christian category of ransom.

Christianity and the Culture Machine

Christianity and the Culture Machine is a precedent-shattering approach to combining theories of media and culture with theology. In this intensive examination of Christianity's role in the cultural marketplace, the author argues that Christianity's inability to effectively contest the ideology of secular humanism is not a theological shortcoming, but rather a communications problem: the institutional church is too wedded to an outmoded aesthetic of Christianity to communicate effectively. Privileging authority and obedience over the egalitarian and transformative goal of Christianity, the church fails to recognize how it undermines the vitality of the Christian narrative and message. In the...

Fire of Mercy, Heart of the Word

To the unstudied eye, St. Matthew's gospel can seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal) storehouse that it is. In his second volume of meditations on Matthew (chapters 12-18), Erasmo Leiva shows Matthewಙs prose to be not terse so much as economical astoundingly so given its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit from reading this. Each short meditation comments on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text not immediately apparent, but rich with meaning. Leivaಙs work is scholarly but eminently approachable by the lay reader. The goal of the book is to help the reader experience the heat of the divine heart/the light of the divine Word. Leiva comments on the Greek text, demonstrating nuances in the text that defy translation. He uses numerous quotes from the Fathers and the Liturgy of the Church to demonstrate the way the Tradition has lived and read the Word of God. His theological reflection vivifies doctrine by seeking its roots in the words and actions of Jesus.

Saint Patrick’S Secret

Mary Jo Ryan travelled over twenty thousand miles, from Ireland, to Australia, to Savannah, Georgia, in search of love, security, and peace. Instead, she found bigotry, hatred, betrayal, and pain; and the nightmare of a secret which she carried alone, until she met Frances Jackson and Richard Frankel. Frances was an African-American war widow whose courage saved Mary Jos life and whose strong faith inspired her to live above her loneliness. Richard was a combat pilot and Korean War hero seeking the truth in a world of wartime lies. Richards search to find his brother, a priest who had disappeared in 1949, revealed a Catholic conspiracy and a cover-up buried in the Pentagon. But it also led h...

Vermilion Drift

William Kent Krueger’s gripping tale of suspense begins with a recurring nightmare, a gun, and a wound in the earth so deep and horrific that it has a name: Vermilion Drift. When the Department of Energy puts an underground iron mine on its short list of potential sites for storage of nuclear waste, a barrage of protest erupts in Tamarack County, Minnesota, and Cork is hired as a security consultant. Deep in the mine during his first day on the job, Cork stumbles across a secret room that contains the remains of six murder victims. Five appear to be nearly half a century old—connected to what the media once dubbed "The Vanishings," a series of unsolved disappearances in the summer of 196...
