The Hippos of Troy
This book addresses perhaps the most famous episode in Classical mythology: the Wooden Horse of Troy. Through analysis of words, images and wrecks, the author proposes a new interpretation of what Homer actually intended when he spoke of the 'hippos' used by the Greeks to conquer Troy: a particular ship type, used to pay tribute to Levantine kings.
Ships and maritime landscapes
This volume gathers 88 contributions related to the theme 'Ships and Maritime Landscapes' of the Thirteenth International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology (ISBSA 13) held in Amsterdam on the 7th to 12th October 2012. The articles include both papers and poster presentations by experts in the field of nautical archaeology, history of ships and shipbuilding, and naval architecture. The contributions deal not only with the theme of maritime landscapes but also with a variety of ship related subjects, like regional watercraft, construction and typology, material applications and design, outfitting, reconstruction and current research.
Nautical and Maritime Culture, from the Past to the Future
Since the dawn of history, the sea has connected and divided human societies. In order to address this, increasingly ingenious and innovative technological solutions have been developed, and the sea has never been an insuperable barrier to mankind. This book presents the proceedings of ICNM 2019, the 3rd International Conference on Nautical and Maritime Culture, held in Naples, Italy, on 14 and 15 November 2019. The conference covers all conceptual and theoretical aspects relating to nautical and maritime culture, and topics covered by the 21 papers presented here include: the history of ships and navigation; maritime museums and libraries; naval architecture and the evolution of marine engineering; the conservation of nautical marine and maritime heritage; ship and nautical design; careers at sea; and the evolution of the waterfront and the coastal marine environment. War es gar Homer, der es im Alleingang erschuf, als er die Illias und die Odyssee dichtete? Klar ist, dass sich um 800 v. Chr. das Vokalalphabet vom östlichen Mittelmeerraum ausgehend durchsetzt. In vielen Kulturtheorien sind Alphabetisierung und Demokratisierung aufs Engste verknüpft: Die massive Reduktion der nötigen Zeichen bei enormer Ausweitung des mit ihnen Ausdrückbaren stellt in ihnen einen Umschlagpunkt der Geschichte dar.
