A Tropical Belle Epoque
This book, originally published in 1987, is a socio-cultural analysis of a tropical belle epoque: Rio de Janeiro between 1898 and 1914. It relates how the city's elite evolved from the semi-rural, slave-owning patriarchy of the coffee-port seat of a monarchy into an urbane, professional, rentier upper crust dominating the centre of a 'modernising' oligarchical republic. It explores such varied topics as architecture, literature, prostitution, urban reform, the family, secondary schools, and the salon. It evokes a milieu increasingly marked by Europe, demonstrating how French and English culture permeated the lives of elite members who adapted it to their needs and perspectives as a dominant stratum of relatively recent and varied origin. This exploration of cultural 'dependency' in a unique, cosmopolitan, fin-de-siecle urban culture will also interest those concerned with the broader questions of culture and colonialism during the high tide of European imperialism.

The Atlantic Slave Trade
Originally published as a collection in 2006, the essays in this volume discuss the reasons for the end of the slave trade and the institution of slavery itself. They examine the rise of the abolitionist movement in different countries and how the move towards abolition was swifter in some areas than others. Attention is also paid to the economic consequences of abolition, popular attitudes to abolition and the role of the Church. The volume also has an introduction by the editor commenting on the contribution each essay makes.

Abuse of Rights
The book is an adaptation of part of the author's PhD thesis, which won the international prize Prémio FIBE, and was voted one of the three best in Brazil, in the field of Law, in 2023. It deals with the history of the notion of abuse of rights, in its two traditions: the Franco-Belgian (abus de droit) and the German (unzulässige Rechtsausübung). It also presents the discourse of abuse of rights with a 'shortcut' function.
