Dual Transitions from Authoritarian Rule

An “analytically sophisticated and heavily documented” study of two Latin American countries in their economic and political move toward democracy (Choice). In 1982, Latin America experienced a region-wide economic collapse that had a drastic effect on governments throughout Central and South America. Many were pushed to the verge of failure, while several of the most authoritarian—Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Uruguay—went over the brink. Yet somehow, Chile’s repressive military dictatorship and Mexico’s hegemonic civilian regime endured amid the economic chaos. Dual Transitions from Authoritarian Rule explains why these two regimes survived the upheaval and how each progresse...

Mexicans and those who follow Mexican affairs were optimistic in 2000 when the country experienced its first alternation in government (from the Partido Revolucionario Institucional –PRI--to the Partido Acción Nacional--PAN) in more than 70 years. Moreover, the Mexican economy had been restructured in a more open, market-led direction in the course of the 1980s and 1990s. The outcomes of these dual transitions were expected to create a new type of politics that were representative and accountable to citizens, and an economy that would grow rapidly, as it was forced to modernize by facing international competition. Some two decades later, views about Mexico are much less sanguine, and for ...

Plato and Heidegger

In a critique of Heidegger that respects his path of thinking, Francisco Gonzalez looks at the ways in which Heidegger engaged with Plato’s thought over the course of his career and concludes that, owing to intrinsic requirements of Heidegger’s own philosophy, he missed an opportunity to conduct a real dialogue with Plato that would have been philosophically fruitful for us all. Examining in detail early texts of Heidegger’s reading of Plato that have only recently come to light, Gonzalez, in parts 1 and 2, shows there to be certain affinities between Heidegger’s and Plato’s thought that were obscured in his 1942 essay “Plato’s Doctrine of Truth,” on which scholars have exclu...

On a cold January morning in 2013, smelling of petrol and still with the taste of the last beer he had drunk, Paco González was sitting in his garage at home with an iPad in his hand, looking for a pair of carbon fiber slip-ons for his Yamaha R1 as he wanted to replace the ones that came as standard on the bike, which were made of titanium. In the spring he was going to go to the Albacete circuit with his friend José Miguel, and of course, he wanted to use them for the first time there. He found a wide variety of models on European websites, but a much wider range on North American ones, with the added attraction that prices were close to 50% cheaper. Obviously, he opted for a model he found on a North American website, but when he went to buy them, he was unable to do so for different reasons.

This book consolidates some of the most promising advanced smart grid functionalities and provides a comprehensive set of guidelines for their implementation/evaluation using DIgSILENT Power Factory. It includes specific aspects of modeling, simulation and analysis, for example wide-area monitoring, visualization and control, dynamic capability rating, real-time load measurement and management, interfaces and co-simulation for modeling and simulation of hybrid systems. It also presents key advanced features of modeling and automation of calculations using PowerFactory, such as the use of domain-specific (DSL) and DIgSILENT Programming (DPL) languages, and utilizes a variety of methodologies including theoretical explanations, practical examples and guidelines. Providing a concise compilation of significant outcomes by experienced users and developers of this program, it is a valuable resource for postgraduate students and engineers working in power-system operation and planning.

Creative Destruction?

This illuminating historical study examines the political economies of three Latin American countries in their transition toward democratization. Through most of the twentieth century, financial shocks toppled democratic and authoritarian regimes across Latin America. But things began to change in the 1980s. In this wide-ranging comparative history of Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile, Francisco E. González explains why. Gonzalez examines how these three countries were affected by the Great Depression, Latin America’s 1980s debt crisis, and the late 1990s emerging markets’ meltdowns. He finds that democratic or not, each nation’s regime gained stability in the 1980s thanks to changes in institutions, material interests, economic policies, and other factors. Underlying these developments was a growing ease in the exchange of ideas that created a pro-democracy bias—even in Pinochet’s Chile. With a concluding chapter on the impact of the Great Recession in other Latin American states, Eastern Europe, and East Asia, Creative Destruction? lends insight into the survival of democratic and authoritarian regimes during times of extreme financial instability.

This book presents a comprehensive set of guidelines and applications of DIgSILENT PowerFactory, an advanced power system simulation software package, for different types of power systems studies. Written by specialists in the field, it combines expertise and years of experience in the use of DIgSILENT PowerFactory with a deep understanding of power systems analysis. These complementary approaches therefore provide a fresh perspective on how to model, simulate and analyse power systems. It presents methodological approaches for modelling of system components, including both classical and non-conventional devices used in generation, transmission and distribution systems, discussing relevant a...

Vecch...
