Only through an understanding of the dynamics of cocoa cycles can policy decisions be made through the various phases of supply cycles. From Slash-and-burn to Replanting
The most traditional and widely used farming systems in the humid upland tropics are based on fallowing and various forms of slash and burn agriculture. Their sustainability depends on the duration of the fallow. When fallow duration drops below the threshold of seven or eight years crop yield usually declines. A concept described as "forest rent". Given the plight of millions of farmers the development of upland agriculture has become increasingly important. This book reports the results of fieldwork conducted by the editors and other experts in some 40 regions of Indonesia from 1989 to 2001. It finds that some of the most successful improvements have been the result of innovations by the farmers themselves.

EU Development Cooperation and Ethical Certification Schemes
'Transparency', 'Traceability', 'Sustainable standards', 'good agricultural practices' and 'zero-deforestation' are all fine terms which [alongside many others] have emerged in connection with the cocoa sector's certification process. But does the reality of this process justify using such terms? Our initial conclusions in this study, based on an analysis of existing research over recent years, revealed that a considerable number of investigations had been commissioned by the certification schemes themselves. The Indian Ocean Rim
The Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation was formally established in 1997 under the leadership of South Africa, India and Australia. The demise of Apartheid, the fall of the Soviet empire, and the rapid advance of globalization altered the geopolitics of the Indian Ocean region in the early 1990s and served as a catalyst in the creation of the IOR. This book contextualizes the founding of the IOR by outlining the historical aspects of economic ties across the Indian Ocean and previous attempts to promote regional cooperation. The contributors to this volume analyse the post-colonial ideological legacy, the political and economic constraints caused by Apartheid and communism, the end of protectionism and the problem of globalization.
