Life on the Track

For nearly four decades, Frank Henderson was a trade union activist in Longbridge, the Birmingham car plant that stood at the centre of industrial militancy throughout much of the post-war period. He was a councillor during Labour's heyday as a mass party and helped fight racism under Enoch Powell and the National Front. Frank's memoirs offer a sharp insight into the politics of the post-war working class from Attlee to Thatcher.

Mesha was only fifteen years old when German SS Major Heinrich Peeler came to Yugoslavia and requisitioned the ground floor of the Covanich home for an office. However, she matured fast when she witnessed her mother and one of Peeler's men in sexual embrace on the living room couch. When she could not dismiss the horrible scene from her mind, she ran away to join her uncle Peter who was making a name for himself as leader of the Covanich Group, a remnant of the Mihailovich Underground known as "The Chetniks." Little did she know that she too would find love when Frank Henderson, a young American officer, was assigned by the OSS to assist the underground in the acquisition of weapons and supplies. However, love was only one emotional extreme she would encounter as she and Frank traveled the snow-covered mountains of Montenegro and witnessed the pain, suffering, and despair war can bring.

Honor

What is honor? Is it the same as reputation? Or is it rather a sentiment? Is it a character trait, like integrity? Or is it simply a concept too vague or incoherent to be fully analyzed? In the first sustained comparative analysis of this elusive notion, Frank Stewart writes that none of these ideas is correct. Drawing on information about Western ideas of honor from sources as diverse as medieval Arthurian romances, Spanish dramas of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the writings of German jurists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and comparing the European ideas with the ideas of a non-Western society—the Bedouin—Stewart argues that honor must be understood as a right, basically a right to respect. He shows that by understanding honor this way, we can resolve some of the paradoxes that have long troubled scholars, and can make sense of certain institutions (for instance the medieval European pledge of honor) that have not hitherto been properly understood. Offering a powerful new way to understand this complex notion, Honor has important implications not only for the social sciences but also for the whole history of European sensibility.

Henderson's Spear

A masterly epic that weaves a contemporary search for a missing father with a vivid story from the heyday of the British Empire. Liv, a Canadian filmmaker, is writing from a Tahitian jail, piecing together her troubled past and her family's buried history for the unknown daughter she gave up at birth. The search for her own father, a pilot missing since the Korean War, has brought her to the South Seas and landed her behind bars on a trumped-up murder charge. In the stillness of her cell, Liv ponders the secret journal of her ancestor Frank Henderson, who came to these same waters a century before on an extraordinary three-year voyage with Queen Victoria's grandsons--Prince George (later Geo...
