Sustainability in the Coastal Urban Environment

The process of globalization has been in the focus for much discussion and debate over its benefits and downsides. Globalisation has helped to raise productivity and employment; lift millions out of poverty; revolutionised communications; boosted international cooperation; fostered competition; boosted global economic growth and interdependencies through trade and FDI flows; and facilitated scientific discoveries (Gurria, 2007). However, at the same time, globalization is also blamed for a growing uncertainty and insecurity in the job market; depressed wages; increasing inequality; overexploitation of irreplaceable natural resources; the transfer of political power to large multinationals operating outside of the democratic processes; and the sacrifice of cultural and other values to the dictates of the marketplace.

The use of computers in cartography has made it easier for map makers to transform data from one map projection to another and experiment with alternative representations of geographical data. This has created new challenges and opportunities for map projection scientists. Small Scale Map Projection Design focuses on numerical map projection research and is written from the perspective of the map projection user. It demonstrates how advances in the measurement of map projection distortion and in the development of low error map projections can help map makers decide what type of map projection is best for their purpose, and shows how they can eventually design their own map projections.

The sudden appearance of portolan charts, realistic nautical charts of the Mediterranean and Black Sea, at the end of the thirteenth century is one of the most significant occurrences in the history of cartography. Using geodetic and statistical analysis techniques these charts are shown to be mosaics of partial charts that are considerably more accurate than has been assumed. Their accuracy exceeds medieval mapping capabilities. These sub-charts show a remarkably good agreement with the Mercator map projection. It is demonstrated that this map projection can only have been an intentional feature of the charts’ construction. Through geodetic analysis the author eliminates the possibility that the charts are original products of a medieval Mediterranean nautical culture, which until now they have been widely believed to be.

Urban Remote Sensing

Urban Remote Sensing is designed for upper level undergraduates, graduates, researchers and practitioners, and has a clear focus on the development of remote sensing technology for monitoring, synthesis and modeling in the urban environment. It covers four major areas: the use of high-resolution satellite imagery or alternative sources of image date (such as high-resolution SAR and LIDAR) for urban feature extraction; the development of improved image processing algorithms and techniques for deriving accurate and consistent information on urban attributes from remote sensor data; the development of analytical techniques and methods for deriving indicators of socioeconomic and environmental conditions that prevail within urban landscape; and the development of remote sensing and spatial analytical techniques for urban growth simulation and predictive modeling.

Away from the Kitchen

Away From the Kitchen offers a glimpse into the joys and pressures of a chef’s life—satisfying the curiosity of those swept up in the wave of America’s chef-obsession. Here, selected chefs from across the nation disclose some of their most personal dreams and talents—revealing who they are inside and outside the kitchen. In these pages, featured chefs offer up their cherished breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert menus—many of them including never-before-published recipes. Robert Del Grande’s “Country Western Breakfast,” Nancy Silverton’s “Farmer’s Market Lunch for All Seasons,” Frank Stitt’s “Alabama Asado,” and Roy Yamaguchi’s “Hawaiian Garage Barbecue” are just a few of the imaginative and mouth-watering meals to be discovered in Away From the Kitchen. Also included are the personal stories behind each menu, and—best of all—each chef’s insider kitchen tools and tips. With its uniquely personal approach, Away From the Kitchen will appeal to foodies everywhere, as well as readers who want it all: the menus, the recipes, and the chef “scoop.”

Geographic books routinely introduce map projections without providing mathematical explanations of projections and few delve into complex mathematical development or cover the breadth of projections. From basic projecting to advanced transformations, Cartographic Science: A Compendium of Map Projections, with Derivations is a comprehensive reference that offers an explanation of the science of cartography. The book is a compilation of more than a hundred map projections, from classic conics to contemporary transformations using complex variables. Starting from widely described geometric projecting onto flat paper, cylinder, and cone and then progressing through several layers of mathematics...
