The Damned and the Dead

The confrontation between the Wehrmacht and the Red Army on the Eastern Front of World War II was defined by incalculable suffering, destruction, casualties, and heroism. While many historians have chronicled the epic nature of that arena of war, it has largely been left to Russian novelists to fully express the intense human dimensions of that conflict. Frank Ellis's groundbreaking study provides the first comprehensive survey of that impressive body of literature. Canvassing a wide spectrum of works by Soviet and post-Soviet writers, many of whom were war veterans themselves, Ellis uncovers themes both common to war literature in general and distinctive to the Soviet experience. He recalls...

The Stalingrad Cauldron

The encirclement of the German 6th Army at Stalingrad in mid-November 1942 and its final collapse in February 1943 was a signature defeat for Hitler, as more than 100,000 of his soldiers were marched off into captivity. Frank Ellis tackles this oft-told tale from the unique perspective of the German officers and men trapped inside the Red Army's ever-closing ring of forces. This approach makes palpable the growing desperation of an army that began its campaign confident of victory but that long before the end could see how hopeless their situation had become. Highlighting these pages are three previously unpublished German army division accounts, translated here for the first time by Ellis. ...

Barbarossa 1941

Operation Barbarossa, Hitler's plan for invading the Soviet Union, has by now become a familiar tale of overreach, with the Germans blinded to their coming defeat by their initial victory, and the Soviet Union pushing back from the brink of destruction with courageous exploits both reckless and relentless. And while much of this version of the story is true, Frank Ellis tells us in Barbarossa 1941, it also obscures several important historical truths that alter our understanding of the campaign. In this new and intensive investigation of Operation Barbarossa, Ellis draws on a wealth of documents declassified over the past twenty years to challenge the conventional treatment of a critical cha...

This is the story of the author's grandfather, Frank Ellis, a country boy from North Hertfordshire who, along with thousands of other patriots, answered the call of Lord Kitchener and joined the army in 1914. Times were hard and the lure of the excitement of war, a secure job where food and accommodation was provided and the pride of wearing a uniform was hard to resist. Frank spent two years training and fighting for his country, first of all in Flanders and then at the Somme where he lost his life. Most of the time in the trenches he lived like an animal - nearly always wet and filthy, eating, sleeping and fighting in the mud and slime, sharing a hole in the ground with rats, slugs, frogs and beetles. The stench of death was always present as he lived alongside the decaying corpses of his fallen colleagues. Frank's body was never identified and his final resting place is Known Only Unto God.

Crooked M Killings

Marshal Reuben Kane is charged with finding the men who have spread terror and violence in an unprecedented bank robbing spree. It's a routine, albeit dangerous, assignment. Routine, that is, until Reuben discovers Sal McIntyre, badly beaten and left to die by the men he is hunting. Near to her is the body of her murdered husband. Reuben postpones his search in order to nurse the woman back to health, but from the moment she regains consciousness, vengeance is the only thing on her mind. Sal's hatred is all-consuming and, against his better judgement, Reuben finds himself drawn into her ill-conceived plot to kill the men who murdered her husband. Reuben sets out to bring them to justice. But Sal McIntyre wants revenge. At any cost.

Using technical discussion, definition and example, Dr Ellis discusses the art and craft of literary criticism and uses a variety of essay forms to discuss the critical impulse. Critical essays on 17th and 18th century literature and poetry are used to illustrate the notions of criticism and its overall purpose. Excellent study of the origins, purpose and style inherent in literary criticism. " Recommended for research libraries..." Professor M. Hawkins, UL, Alberta
