This Festschrift volume has been published in honor of Frank de Boer, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Frank S. de Boer is a prominent member of the research community in formal methods and theoretical computer science. A brief look at his lengthy publication list reveals a broad area of interest and a versatile modus operandi with: logic and constraint programming; deductive proof systems, soundness, and completeness; semantics, compositionality, and full abstraction; process algebra and decidability; multithreading and actor-based concurrency; agent programming, ontologies, and modal logic; real-time systems, timed automata, and schedulability; enterprise architectures, choreography, and coordination; testing and runtime monitoring; and cloud computing and service-level agreements. For a while, he also liked failures, especially in semantics, and optimistically concluded with the failure of failures. In fact, Frank has an opportunistic approach to research. Rather than seeing obstacles, he finds opportunities.
This Festschrift volume, published in honor of Willem-Paul de Roever, contains 19 detailed papers written by the friends and colleagues of the honoree, all eminent scientists in their own right. These are preceded by a detailed bibliography and rounded off, at the end of the book, with a gallery of photographs. The theme under which the papers have been collected is Concurrency, Compositionality, and Correctness, reflecting the focus of Willem-Paul de Roever's research career. Topics addressed include model checking, computer science and state machines, ontology and mereology of domains, game theory, compiler correctness, fair scheduling and encryption algorithms.
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the First International Workshop on Formal Approaches to Agent-Based Systems, FAABS 2000, held in Greenbelt, MD, USA, in April 2000. The 22 revised full papers presented together with 13 posters and two panel discussion reports were carefully reviewed and improved for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on verifying agents' mental states, synthesizing agents initially, frameworks and formalizations, modeling and execution, inter-agent communication, and adaptive agents.
As research progresses, it enables multi-robot systems to be used in more and more complex and dynamic scenarios. Hence, the question arises how different modelling and reasoning paradigms can be utilised to describe the intended behaviour of a team and execute it in a robust and adaptive manner. Hendrik Skubch presents a solution, ALICA (A Language for Interactive Cooperative Agents) which combines modelling techniques drawn from different paradigms in an integrative fashion. Hierarchies of finite state machines are used to structure the behaviour of the team such that temporal and causal relationships can be expressed. Utility functions weigh different options against each other and assign agents to different tasks. Finally, non-linear constraint satisfaction and optimisation problems are integrated, allowing for complex cooperative behaviour to be specified in a concise, theoretically well-founded manner.
All modern industries rely on large and complex software systems. In order to construct such large systems in a systematic manner, the focus of the development methodologies has switched in the last two decades from functional to structural issues. Formal methods have been applied successfully to the verification of medium-sized programs in protocol and hardware design. This book is the outcome of an international research seminar on objects, agents, and features held at Dagstuhl Castle, Germany in February 2003. In recent years, concepts in object-oriented modeling and programming have been extended in variuos directions, giving rise to new paradigms such as agent-orientation and feature orientation. This book explores the relationship between the original paradigm and the two new ones. The 12 revised full papers presented together with an introductery overview by the volume editors were carefully reviewed and improved for publication.
