Since earliest Biblical times, grass has been a shaping factor in the history of mankind. The story of the companionship of grass and people is a chronicle of science, invention, experiment, and devotion; of the development of value and beauty; and of the conservation not only of land but of people. As a result of awakened interest since the 1930s, when the Dust Bowl brought the importance of grass so sharply into focus, some 1,700 hitherto unfamiliar varieties of grasses have been recognized. Many more will undoubtedly be brought to light through increasing use of university and government agricultural experiments.
