Two-fluid dynamics is a challenging subject rich in physics and prac tical applications. Many of the most interesting problems are tied to the loss of stability which is realized in preferential positioning and shaping of the interface, so that interfacial stability is a major player in this drama. Typically, solutions of equations governing the dynamics of two fluids are not uniquely determined by the boundary data and different configurations of flow are compatible with the same data. Thus, examples of low-dimensional systems are structures with one or several layers, single lines or patterns of lines, and small clusters isolated or dispersed in solid systems. Such low dimensional features can be produced in a wide variety of materials systems with a broad spectrum of scientific and practical interests. These features, in turn, induce specific properties and, particularly, specific transport properties. This is the second volume of Multiphase Science and TechnoJogy, a new international series of books intended to provide authoritative overviews of im portant areas in multiphase systems. The alm is to have systematic and tutorial presentations of the state of knowledge in various areas. The objective of the chapters is to allow the nonspecialist reader to gain an up-to-date idea of the present state of development in a given subject. The response to Volume 1 of the se ries has been very positive, and we believe that the present volume will be equally weil received. Volume 1 was concerned entirely with gas-liquid systems, and the first four chapters of the present volume also relate to such systems. However, the inten tion of the se ries is to cover a wide range of multiphase systems, and we are, therefore, pleased to include in the present volume chapters that refer to liquid liquid and gas-solid multiphase flows, respectively. The first chapter in the present volume is by Professor A. E. Dukler of the University of Houston, Texas, and Professor Y. Taitel of Tel-Aviv University, Israel.
The porous structure of molecular sieves, combined with their chemical composition, makes them uniquely suitable for use as catalysts or catalytic supports. As such, the materials are used in a wide range of chemical reactions, and as components of formulated products. The shape selectivity of the materials further enhances their chemical usefulness, and exploitation of their unique absorption properties holds the key to improving their catalytic properties. This volume contains the presentations of the principal speakers at the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Porto Portese, Italy,23 August - 2 September, 1982. This meeting was the third in a series devoted to the molecular biology of plants. The initial meeting was held in Strasbourg, France in 1976 (J. Weil and L. Bogorad, organizers), and the second in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1979 (C. Leaver, organizer). As in these previous meetings, we have attempted to cover the major topics of plant molecular biology so as to promote the integration of information emerging at an accelerating rate from the various sub-disciplines of the field. In addition, we have introduced several topics, unique to higher plants, that have not yet been approached with the tools of molec ular biology, but that should present new and important aspects of plants amenable to study in terms of DNA -+ RNA -+ Protein. This meeting also served to inaugerate the new International Society for Plant Molecular Biology. The need for this society is, like the NATO meetings themselves, an indication of the growth, vitalitv and momentum of this field of research.
This volume attempts to show molecular modeling as a new multidisciplinary area of research that transcends the boundaries traditionally separating biology, chemistry and physics. To this purpose, leading scientists present applications of molecular modeling to a variety of important problems such as: drug design, protein modeling, catalyst modeling, properties of glass, mechanical properties of materials and materials design. The emphasis here is on the atomistic approach.
