This proceedings records the 31st International Colloquium on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics (“Group 31”). Plenary-invited articles propose new approaches to the moduli spaces in gauge theories (V. Pestun, 2016 Weyl Prize Awardee), the phenomenology of neutrinos in non-commutative space-time, the use of Hardy spaces in quantum physics, contradictions in the use of statistical methods on complex systems, and alternative models of supersymmetry. This volume’s survey articles broaden the colloquia’s scope out into Majorana neutrino behavior, the dynamics of radiating charges, statistical pattern recognition of amino acids, and a variety of applications of gauge theory, among other...

Football and Literature in South America

South America is a region that enjoys an unusually high profile as the origin of some of the world’s greatest writers and most celebrated footballers. This is the first book to undertake a systematic study of the relationship between football and literature across South America. Beginning with the first football poem published in 1899, it surveys a range of texts that address key issues in the region’s social and political history. Drawing on a substantial corpus of short stories, novels and poems, each chapter considers the shifting relationship between football and literature in South America across more than a century of writing. The way in which authors combine football and literature to challenge the dominant narratives of their time suggests that this sport can be seen as a recurring theme through which matters of identity, nationhood, race, gender, violence, politics and aesthetics are played out. This book is fascinating reading for any student, scholar or serious fan of football, as well as for all those interested in the relationship between sports history, literature and society.

The primary objective of this study has been to critically examine the dynamics of rapid deforestation and land degradation in Rondônia, Brazil. As previously emphasized, the analytical framework utilized in this essay has drawn primarily from the fields of political economy and human ecology, an approach recently described as "regional political ecology"(Blaikie and Brookfield 1987). Although characteristic of a growing body of literature focusing on the inter-relationships between human society and environmental degradation (Watts 1983, Hecht 1985, Blaikie 1985, Blaikie and Brookfield 1987, de Janvry and Garcia 1988), such an approach has not been typical of most empirical research on sma...
