The New Materialism
Alain Badiou and Slavoj Žižek have become two of the dominant voices in contemporary philosophy and critical theory. In this book, Geoff Pfeifer offers an in-depth look at their respective views. Using Louis Althusser’s materialism as a starting point—which, as Pfeifer shows, was built partially as a response to the Marxism of the Parti Communiste Français and partially in dialogue with other philosophical movements and intellectual currents of its times—the book looks at the differing ways in which both Badiou’s and Žižek’s work attempt to respond to issues that arise within the Althusserian edifice. Pfeifer argues here that, ultimately, Žižek’s materialism succeeds in responding to these issues in ways that Badiou’s does not. In building this argument, Pfeifer engages not only with the work of Althusser, Badiou, and Žižek and their intellectual backgrounds, but also with much of the contemporary scholarship surrounding these thinkers. As such, Pfeifer’s book is an important addition to the ongoing debates within contemporary critical theory.

Intermittency
Explores the concept of historical intermittency in 5 recent French philosophers. Andrew Gibson engages with five recent and contemporary French philosophers, Badiou, Jambet, Lardreau, Francoise Proust and Ranciere, who each produce a post-Hegelian philosophy of history founded on an assertion of the intermittency of historical value. Gibson explores this `anti-schematics of historical reason' and its implication for politics, ethics and aesthetics in a wide range of modern intellectual contexts, finding its necessary complement and most powerful expression in a wealth of modern art, chiefly modern literature. The result is a sustained reflection on the possible character of a contemporary philosophy of history and an important contribution to our knowledge of contemporary French philosophy.

This collection offer a series of new essays authored by leading scholars of Latin American and U.S. Latino theater as well as the performance script Mexterminator vs. The Global Predator, written by Guillermo Gomez-Pena. The fourteen essays focus on contemporary Latin American and U.S. Latino plays and performances and challenge the meanings of genre, gender, race, cultural identity, and performance itself in the context of globalization and shifting borders. The concept of trans/acting, a term that connotes negotiation and/or exchange, provides the framework for essays that include such topics as tansculturation, transnationalism, transgender, transgenre, translation, and adaptation. These individual studies of contemporary theater and performance arts are complimented by trans/actor Gomez-Pena's Mexterminator vs. The Global Predator, a striking transgressive script that underscores the performance nature of territorial and symbolic border crossings.
