The development of Operations Research (OR) requires constant improvements, such as the integration of research results with business applications and innovative educational practice. The full deployment and commercial exploitation of goods and services generally need the construction of strong synergies between educational institutions and businesses. The IO2015 -XVII Congress of APDIO aims at strengthening the knowledge triangle in education, research and innovation, in order to maximize the contribution of OR for sustainable growth, the promoting of a knowledge-based economy, and the smart use of finite resources. The IO2015-XVII Congress of APDIO is a privileged meeting point for the promotion and dissemination of OR and related disciplines, through the exchange of ideas among teachers, researchers, students , and professionals with different background, but all sharing a common desire that is the development of OR.

Production Planning by Mixed Integer Programming

This textbook provides a comprehensive modeling, reformulation and optimization approach for solving production planning and supply chain planning problems, covering topics from a basic introduction to planning systems, mixed integer programming (MIP) models and algorithms through the advanced description of mathematical results in polyhedral combinatorics required to solve these problems. Based on twenty years worth of research in which the authors have played a significant role, the book addresses real life industrial production planning problems (involving complex production structures with multiple production stages) using MIP modeling and reformulation approach. The book provides an int...

This timely collection addresses central issues in communication theory on the nature of organizing and organization. It contributes to the conception of materiality, agency, and discourse in current theorizing and research on the constitution of organizations. Representing scholarship in various parts of the world, it features contributions that overcome traditional conceptions of the nature of organizing by addressing the difficult issues of the performative character of agency; materiality as the basis of the iterability of communication and continuity of organizations; and discourse as both textuality and interaction.

Trypanosomiasis and Leishmaniasis are related diseases caused by single celled organisms (protozoa) transmitted by insects. Between them, these diseases are responsible for much suffering among humans and livestock and so a greater understanding of their biology is a vital part of the campaign to control them. Modern molecular techniques available for use in understanding the control of these diseases are becoming more sophisticated and are increasingly becoming universally applicable to a wide variety of diseases. This book brings together the research approaches that are used interchangeably to understand both Trypanosomiasis and Leishmaniasis. Examples of such fruitful integration can be ...

Aivazovsky

Aivazovsky

The seascapes of Ivan Aivazovsky (1817-1900) made his name in Russia, his native country where he was a painter of the court of Nicholas I, yet his fame barely extended beyond these borders. Master of the Sublime, he made the ocean the principal subject of his work. Sometimes wild and raging, sometimes calm and peaceful, the life of the ocean is composed of as many allegories as the human condition. Like Turner, whom he knew and whose art he admired, he never painted outside in nature, nor did he make preliminary sketches; his paintings were the fruit of his exceptional memory. With more than 6,000 canvasses, Aivazovsky was one of the most prolific painters of his time.

Hyperedge Replacement: Grammars and Languages

The area of graph grammars is theoretically attractive and well motivated byvarious applications. More than 20 years ago, the concept of graph grammars was introduced by A. Rosenfeld as a formulation of some problems in pattern recognition and image processing, as well as by H.J. Schneider as a method for data type specification. Within graph-grammar theory one maydistinguish the set-theoretical approach, the algebraic approach, and the logical approach. These approaches differ in the method in which graph replacement is described. Specific approaches, node replacement and hyperedge replacement, concern the basic units of a hypergraph, nodes and hyperedges. This monograph is mainly concerned with the hyperedge-replacement approach. Hyperedge-replacement grammars are introduced as a device for generating hypergraph languages including graph languages and string languages. The concept combines a context-free rewriting with a comparatively large generative power. The volume includes a foreword by H. Ehrig.

The Steiner Tree Problem

The Steiner problem asks for a shortest network which spans a given set of points. Minimum spanning networks have been well-studied when all connections are required to be between the given points. The novelty of the Steiner tree problem is that new auxiliary points can be introduced between the original points so that a spanning network of all the points will be shorter than otherwise possible. These new points are called Steiner points - locating them has proved problematic and research has diverged along many different avenues. This volume is devoted to the assimilation of the rich field of intriguing analyses and the consolidation of the fragments. A section has been given to each of the ...

Crystal Structure Determination

  • Type: Book
  • -
  • Published: 1998

  • Publisher: Unknown

This concise text describes the basic principles of crystal structure determination by X-ray diffraction and the application of these principles in practice. The technique is presented step-by-step and illustrated with a wide range of case studies, including the use of the most up-to-date equipment. Crystal Structure Determination explains how X-ray crystallography fits in with modern chemistry, why it is important, and what it can do, with the aim of enabling the reader to understand and assess structural results in books and research journals. There is additional coverage of related topics such as neutron diffraction and the application of computer databases. Mathematical treatment is kept at a relatively low level and is complemented by extensive illustrations and worked examples. This clear introduction to the topic will be an essential text for chemistry undergraduates. Other related science undergraduates (biochemists, environmental scientists, etc.) and postgraduate chemists will also find this book useful.
