Cultural Governance
Cultural governance is currently regarded as a transversal element of public policy in Europe. Cultural Policy and Management in Borderlands
This book uncovers the processes at play in the development of cultural policies, projects and networks in spaces at the edge of their countries, marked by their proximity with a borderline. On a subject which is studied mainly in North America and Western Europe and based on individual case studies, its originality lies in offering a comparative view on the subject, as well as in comparing a European case – the France-Germany borderlands – to a South American case – the Brazil-Uruguay borderlands. Through a multi-sited ethnographic study, the author develops an analysis of the formal and informal processes and networks which sustain this cultural action, looking at the relative contribution of processes led by institutions, cultural agents and the civil society. This book provides theoretical tools for the analysis of the way cultural ecosystems function in borderlands and is valuable reading for scholars of cultural policy, geography and arts management.

Nicolaas van Wijk (1880-1941) was the founder of Slavic studies in the Netherlands and one of the greatest Slavists in general. This book describes for the first time how a scholar of the Dutch language, whose etymological dictionary of the Dutch language is still considered the best of its kind, was appointed in 1913 to the newly created Chair in Slavic languages at Leiden University and built up a tremendous reputation for himself in Eastern Europe. An art collector who was a patient at the Amsterdam Medical Center once expressed his gratitude with a donation of several works of art, the seed for the extraordinary modern art collection that now flourishes at the Amsterdam Medical Center. Since it began seriously cultivating its art collection in the 1980s, the Center has amassed approximately 5,000 works by Dutch and Dutch-resident artists. The Amsterdam Medical Center Art Book is an extraordinary showcase of the Center’s rich and diverse collection, which focuses on Dutch art from the 1950s through the 1970s. The book highlights several stunning examples within the collection of such benchmark art movements as CoBrA, Mixed Media Art, Zero Art, and New Figuration. The Intellectual Origins of the Belgian Revolution
This book explores the political ideas of the Belgian Revolution of 1830, which led to the break-up of the Restoration state of the ‘united’ Kingdom of the Netherlands. It uncovers the origins of liberalism and political Catholicism in the Southern Netherlands in the wake of the French Revolution, and traces the development of political language in the context of the tensions between the Northern and Southern part of the united Netherlands. It shows how differences in ‘Dutch’ and ‘Belgian’ political and intellectual history resulted in different understandings of essential political concepts such as ‘sovereignty’ and ‘balance of powers’, as well as of the nature of the constitutional order of 1815. Finally, it traces the emergence of Belgian nationalism within the discourse of opposition against the government. Stefaan Marteel therefore provides a fresh perspective on the intellectual background of the rise of the nation-state in the nineteenth century.
