This book presents a broad exposition of analytical and numerical methods for modeling composite materials, laminates, polycrystals and other heterogeneous solids, with emphasis on connections between material properties and responses on several length scales, ranging from the nano and microscales to the macroscale. Many new results and methods developed by the author are incorporated into the rich fabric of the subject, which has developed from the work of many researchers over the last 50 years. Among the new results, the book offers an extensive analysis of internal and interface stresses caused by eigenstrains, such as thermal, transformation and inelastic strains in the constituents, wh...

At last count, nearly 2,400 people can claim that their lives were saved by a U.S. submarine during World War II. Of that number, 523 Allied aviators could claim that distinction after crashing their aircraft into the sea and being saved by a submarine operating in the "Lifeguard League." The remaining number were a collection of other military and civilian personnel, each with a story to tell and now able to tell their grand-children. Some of those rescued went on to retire as senior military officers including U.S. Navy Admirals, some back to missionary work, some to manage large companies in later years, some to philanthropic endeavors to pay everyone back for saving their lives. Appendix A is an intensely-researched index of nearly 2,200 names of those saved.
This book collects major research contributions in composite materials and sandwich structures supported by the U.S. Office of Naval Research. It contains over thirty chapters written by experts and serves as a reference and guide for future research.
V. 1. Deformations of materials -- v. 2. Failures of materials -- v. 3. Multiphysics behaviors includes three-volume index.
III European Conference on Computational Mechanics: Solids, Structures and Coupled Problem in Engineering Computational Mechanics in Solid, Structures and Coupled Problems in Engineering is today a mature science with applications to major industrial projects. This book contains the edited version of the Abstracts of Plenary and Keynote Lectures and Papers, and a companion CD-ROM with the full-length papers, presented at the III European Conference on Computational Mechanics: Solids, Structures and Coupled Problems in Engineering (ECCM-2006), held in the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering, Lisbon, Portugal 5th - 8th June 2006. The book reflects the state-of-art of Computation Mechanics in Solids, Structures and Coupled Problems in Engineering and it includes contributions by the world most active researchers in this field.
A review and summary of advancements related to mechanical behavior and related mechanics issues of titanium matrix composites (TMCs), a class of high-temperature materials useful in the propulsion and airframe components in advanced aerospace systems. After an introduction to TMCs, different authors review and summarise the advancements related to mechanical behavior and related mechanics issues of TMCs.
