Thornton

In 1953, developer Sam Hoffman set out to build modern brick homes in a brand-new neighborhood north of Denver. He envisioned a planned community with land reserved for schools, churches, and shopping centers. Many veterans of World War II, with their young families, moved into houses built by Hoffmans F&S Construction, and these new citizens formed the Thornton Community Association, which eventually led the effort to incorporate the city in 1956. The history of Eastlake, founded in 1905, is tied to that of Thornton, and it is therefore included in this volume as well. Eastlake retains its own identity even though it now lies within Thorntons boundaries, and both communities continue to see housing and population growth as new families move in seeking the same opportunities as those who first settled here.

Transforming the University of Kansas

Sitting atop Mount Oread, the University of Kansas stands as a monument to the determination of the state's earliest settlers to build for the future. As a "city on a hill," the university has also mirrored both American society's hopes and its fears—and never has this been truer than over the past five decades. Transforming the University of Kansas chronicles the many accomplishments and the daunting challenges that marked the last half-century at the University. On the eve of the sesquicentennial anniversary of the school's founding, this book reflects upon the people, politics, and developments that have transformed KU since 1965, making it the distinctive institution of higher learning...

""Austin, Pa.'s Major Leaguer"" tells the story of Mark Corey, one of 18 graduates of Austin High School in 1992. This book traces Mark's determined, but detoured trek to baseball's big leagues. It's a tale of one family's love, guidance and support, but it also recognizes residents living in sparsely populated villages and towns in northern Pennsylvania and the role that youth athletics plays in the morale and fabric of a small community. It shines a spotlight on the past and present achievements of many whose actions on the field or court united citizens and created memories that defy the march of time.
