In this pioneering book in the newly emerging field of architectural design and dementia, Uriel Cohen and Gerald Weisman set forth a program of practical design principles linked to specific therapeutic goals. People with dementia live in environments ranging from their own homes to community-based group homes and long-term care facilities. Holding On to Home addresses key issues for the planning and modification of all these settings. The book is equally useful to caregivers, nursing home and adult day care planners and administrators, architects, and interior designers, as well as to students and practitioners of geriatrics and gerontology.

Winner of the 2007 Polsky Prize given by the ASID Foundation As the U.S. population ages, adult day services have become an integral component in the continuum of care for elderly people. Providing a variety of social and medical services for cognitively or physically impaired elderly people who otherwise might reside in institutions, these facilities can be found in a variety of building types, from purpose-built facilities to the proverbial church basement. They also vary widely in their philosophies, case mix, funding mechanisms, and services. In this interdisciplinary study, Keith Diaz Moore, Lyn Dally Geboy, and Gerald D. Weisman offer guidance for planning and designing good-quality ad...

"This monograph is based upon a workshop sponsored by the Institute on Aging and Environment at the 1994 EDRA Conference. San Antonio is the home of Victoria Plaza, the first public housing facility specifically designed for and limited to older persons, where Frances Carp conducted a nine year longitudinal study of the effects of the housing on its residents. The convening of the 25th Annual Meeting of the Environmental Design Research Association in San Antonio in March of 1994, offered the opportunity to use the occasion to mark the significance of the Victoria Plaza study and to reflect on the substantive and methodological lessons that can be learned from it. The monograph includes Frances Carp's reflections on her pioneering experiences with Post Occupancy Evaluations and the lessons applicable today. Min Kantrowitz and Gerald Weisman present their comments and conclusions."--ABSTRACT.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
