Money and Banking

Today, interest in monetary history has been revived. Economists are examing the "structure" of money and banking: what is money and what are banks? With new technologies, overwhelming market forces, and changes in law and regulation, the answers that had been taken for granted have been revealed to be inadequate. Money and Banking spans the period from the founding of the country to the present. The unifying theme is the consideration of the legal and economic underpinnings of money and banking during the several monetary regimes found in the history of the United States. Solitons

Solitons were discovered by John Scott Russel in 1834, and have interested scientists and mathematicians ever since. They have been the subject of a large body of research in a wide variety of fields of physics and mathematics, not to mention engineering and other branches of science such as biology. This volume comprises the written versions of the talks presented at a workshop held at Queen's University in 1997, an interdisciplinary meeting wherein top researchers from many fields could meet, interact, and exchange ideas. Topics covered include mathematical and numerical aspects of solitons, as well as applications of solitons to nuclear and particle physics, cosmology, and condensed-matter physics. The book should be of interest to researchers in any field in which solitons are encountered.

Justice Accused

  • Categories: Law

What should a judge do when he must hand down a ruling based on a law that he considers unjust or oppressive? This question is examined through a series of problems concerning unjust law that arose with respect to slavery in nineteenth-century America. "Cover's book is splendid in many ways. His legal history and legal philosophy are both first class. . . . This is, for a change, an interdisciplinary work that is a credit to both disciplines."--Ronald Dworkin, Times Literary Supplement "Scholars should be grateful to Cover for his often brilliant illumination of tensions created in judges by changing eighteenth- and nineteenth-century jurisprudential attitudes and legal standards. . . An exc...

Mr. Justice Black and His Critics

Many jurists give lip service to the idea that judicial interpretation of constitutional provisions should be based on the intent of the framers. Few, if any, have been as faithful to that conception as Hugo Black, a U.S. Senator from Alabama. Once on the court, he played a leading role in establishing freedom of speech and other guarantees the interpretation he (and others) believed were warranted by the language and intent of the framers. Late in his career, however, Black's commitment to literalism and intent led him to assume apparently conservative positions in civil liberties cases. The author analyzes Black's judicial and constitutional philosophy, as well as his approach to specific cases, through the eyes of Black's critics and through an assessment of scholarly opinion of his jurisprudence. -- from book jacket.
