Doing Politics
This edited volume explores the discursive, performative and mediated dimensions of contemporary political discourse. The strengths of the volume are manifold: it contains cutting edge interdisciplinary research on political discourses by international authors (UK, USA, Italy, Germany, Austria, Denmark) in political science, discourse linguistic and social interaction research. The contributions represent a wide range of methodological approaches to political discourse, analyzing a broad variety of genres, some of which have been less analyzed to-date, for example Wikipedia articles in combination with their discussion pages or the interaction between politicians and voters in the constituency office of a British Member of Parliament. The contributions also focus on political discourses of high and relevant topicality, such as EU membership of Britain, populism, migration and xenophobia, terrorism and narratives in international relations.
Germany and the Confessional Divide
From German unification in 1871 through the early 1960s, confessional tensions between Catholics and Protestants were a source of deep division in German society. Engaging this period of historic strife, Germany and the Confessional Divide focuses on three traumatic episodes: the Kulturkampf waged against the Catholic Church in the 1870s, the collapse of the Hohenzollern monarchy and state-supported Protestantism after World War I, and the Nazi persecution of the churches. It argues that memories of these traumatic experiences regularly reignited confessional tensions. Only as German society became increasingly secular did these memories fade and tensions ease.

Der begriffsgeschichtlich dominierten Aufarbeitung wird damit ein eigens entwickelter genuin linguistischer Ansatz entgegengestellt, der neue Erkenntnisse zum Wortgebrauch der letzten 300 Jahre zutage fördert.

Textgliederung
Die Mittel und Verfahren für die Gliederung von Texten in Einheiten werden seit den Anfängen von Text- und Gesprächslinguistik kontrovers diskutiert. Die vorliegende Arbeit führt die Ergebnisse verschiedener Forschungsrichtungen zusammen und vergleicht anhand zahlreicher detaillierter Beispielanalysen die Gliederung geschriebener und gesprochener Texte (verschiedener Text- bzw. Gesprächssorten): Auf der Grundlage des Nähe/Distanz-Konzeptes werden für beide medialen Varietäten die Gliederungsressourcen (syntaktisch, lexikalisch-semantisch, prosodisch usw.) und die Gliederungseinheiten (Ellipse, Satz, Absatz; Äußerungseinheit, Turn usw.) systematisch aufeinander bezogen. Vorgestellt wird ein Beschreibungskonzept, das auch den Einfluss pragmatischer Faktoren auf die Äußerungsgestaltung ("pragmatische Syntax") konsequent berücksichtigt.
