The field of crystallization holds many challenges, with the physical and chemical complexity of the crystallization process being core to the dynamic nature of the field. Exciting advances are currently being achieved in the areas of nanoparticle formation, product and particle design and methods of particle characterisation. There is also significant progress and innovation in the design, scale-up and control of crystallizers. These key developments are reflected in the session themes of the 14th BIWIC (Bremen International Workshop on Industrial Crystallization) with the technical programme incorporating a wide range of topics, such as; The formation and stabilisation of nano particles; Polymorphs and co-crystals in pharmaceutical preparation; Product and particle design; Kinetics of crystallization and measurement of crystal properties; Freeze, Antisolvent, Reactive and Melt crystallization; and Design, scale-up and control of crystallization processes at the industrial scale.

Mixing and Crystallization

We are honoured to present this collection of selected papers from the International Conference on Mixing and Crystallization, held at the Tioman Island, Malaysia in April, 1998. We are grateful to the editorial board comprising five eminent researchers in the field of mixing and crystallization for their thoughtful review and suggestions. In order to make this book as current as possible some of the papers have been thoroughly revised, which caused some delay in bringing out this edited version. We received necessary support from the Institute of Post Graduate Studies and Research, the University of Malaya and the Special Research Centre for Multiphase Processes, and the University of Newca...

Traditionally, fluid mixing and the related multiphase contacting processes have always been regarded as an empirical technology. Many aspects of mixing, dispersing and contacting were related to power draw, but understanding of the phenomena was limited or qualitative at the most. In particular during the last decade, however, plant operation targets have tightened and product specifications have become stricter. The public awareness as to safety and environmental hygiene has increased. The drive towards larger degrees of sustainability in the process industries has urged for lower amounts of solvents and for higher yields and higher selectivities in chemical reactors. All this has resulted...

Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are a group of 16 related elements with low concentrations in air particulate matter, soil and water. An analytical technique was devised capable of measuring simultaneously all 16 REEs at very low levels and a great speed in environmental matrices. REEs were analysed in river sediments, soil and air in The Netherlands and China. In air particulate matter, the variation of REE concentration depended on the wind direction and could be correlated with the emission type (petrochemical industry, traffic, background). Chinese river sediments showed strong enrichment in Gd. High crust-normalised ratios were observed for Ce and Dy in Guangdong soils. Dutch soil from particular site was enriched in Gd, Nd, Dy and Ce, as well as in heavy metals. In leaching tests, less than 0,8% of the total REE content of the soil was released which was much lower than for heavy metals. REE are generally poorly soluble in the environment and remain adsorbed to soils.

8th World Salt Symposium

Hardbound. These two volumes are the proceedings of the 8th World Salt Symposium, held 7 - 11 May 2000 in The Hague, the Netherlands. The papers in the proceedings deal with all aspects of salt and show how important salt is for mankind. Salt: life depends on it is not a fancy catchphrase, it is a simple fact. An example of its many vital roles is the use of salt as carrier of micronutrients. Iodization of salt prevents Iodine Deficiency Disorders, which affect or could affect the lives of billions of people. The papers in these proceedings show just how much progress has been achieved.Salt and health is only one of the myriad of topics dealing with salt presented in the proceedings. Geology, solution mining and production are of course well represented. In line with the increased competition in the salt markets and the increased environmental awareness of the salt producers and the salt consumers, salt processing, salt markets and the relation bet
