Hovering over the face of the deep
'Why does everyone need to die?', 'Does my hamster have a soul?' Theologians and philosophers have always wrestled with such questions. The articles gathered in this book - which represent recent educational approaches to philosophizing and theologizing with children - are very diverse in approach and emphasis. Nevertheless all underline the importance of supporting children and young people in their efforts to discuss questions of meaning. Quotations in the articles capture with vividness and immediacy their intense engagement with the puzzles of existence. Educators may learn better to support such processes, and by the same token be enriched by the interaction. Such processes resemble the phenomenon of the Black Sun where starlings get together from different directions in large flocks in order to survive the night. Both, as indicated in the title of this book are hovering over the face of the deep. This book offers a meeting place for theologians and philosophers, and although the conversation does a great deal to clarify their relationship, differences in opinion remain. Its contributors are from Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Forms of Muslim Children’s Spirituality
This book empirically reconstructs the relationships of Muslim children to God demonstrating that Muslim children in Germany already show a broad spectrum of different images of God and relations to God already at the age of ten.
REDD+ politics in the media
In this study, we assessed the media coverage of the REDD+ mechanism in Perus national and subnational newspapers to better understand the messages reaching Peruvian readers. At the national level, we found only 33 articles on REDD+ in eight national newspapers: El Comercio, Perú 21, Gestión, Expreso, La República, La Razón, El Peruano and Trome. Expanding the search to include climate change and forests, we found 203 articles. Upon finding this low coverage in the national press, we chose two of the countrys departments where most of the REDD+ projects are located and which have shown the greatest progress in the readiness stages: San Martín (Voces and Ahora) and Madre de Dios (Don Jaque and El Observador). But again we only found 10 articles on REDD+ and 10 more when we expanded the search to include climate change and forests.
Seeking Sense in the City
Young people have a perfect right to good education. They deserve committed educators, safe schools, powerful learning opportunities, but most of all a clear sense of direction, that offers them insight in the values, norms and beliefs of the global community. In Europe, there is a long tradition of public moral and religious education, in close cooperation with churches and faith communities. In this book the expertise of German, Dutch, English and French speaking scholars is collected and reflected on the basis of the metaphor of the city, the place of encounter with other people, in complexity and diversity.
