Protocols in Lichenology
As an intricate association between a fungus and one or more green algae or cyanobacteria, lichens are one of the most successful examples of symbiosis. These fascinating organisms survive extreme desiccation and temperatures. They are adapted to a great variety of habitats, from deserts to intertidal zones, from tropical rain forests to the peaks of the Himalayas and to circumpolar ecosystems. Lichens are extremely efficient accumulators of atmospherically deposited pollutants, and are therefore widely used to monitor environmental pollution. Their wide range of secondary products show pharmaceutically interesting fungicidal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. Lichens are extremely difficult to culture. This manual provides well-tested tissue culture protocols, protocols for studying lichen ultrastructure, (eco)physiology, primary and secondary compounds, and for using lichens as bioindicators.

Plant Systematics
The focus of the present edition has been to further consolidate the information on the principles of plant systematic, include detailed discussion on all major systems of classification, and significantly, also include discussion on the selected families of vascular plants, without sacrificing the discussion on basic principles. The families included for discussion are largely those which have wide representation, as also those that are less known but significant in evaluating the phylogeny of angiosperms. Diversity of Lichenology
This 100th anniversary volume of Bibliotheca Lichenologica, pays tribute to the diversity in lichenology. Multiple, cosmopolitan aspects of the research on lichens in its breadth are reflected in the large variety of subjects covered in 18 chapters by 37 authors from 13 countries. The chapters document recent developments in taxonomy, phytogenetic analyses, phylogenetic research, fl oristic studies and lichen ecology, and - again - a large number of newly described taxa, keys to the identifi cation of Usnea, and details of current analytical work. A personal review by Ingvar Kärnefelt of past and present contributors to lichenology. His biographical sketches provide a good measure of the multi-faceted nature of lichenology and of the expertise involved in its development, paying tribute to Bibliotheca Lichenologica's anniversary. The volume was carefully edited by three prominent and active members of the lichenological community, Arne Thell, University of Lund, Sweden, Mark R. D. Seaward, University of Bradford, United Kingdom, and Tassilo Feuerer, University of Hamburg, Germany.
