Environments of Exile
Forced migration always takes place within specific cultural, social, political, and spatial environments. This volume focuses on the interaction between those forced to migrate and their environments in the contexts of escape and exile from Nazi-occupied Europe. Forced emigration from Nazi Germany was a global phenomenon that took refugees to regions they often knew very little about. Not only did they have to adapt to foreign cultures, but also to unfamiliar natural environments that often exposed them to severe temperature conditions, droughts, rainy seasons, and diseases. While some refugees prepared for the natural conditions of their exile destination, others acquired environmental knowledge at their host countries or were able to adapt prior knowledge to the new environment. Consequently, specific knowledge about the environment had a large influence on the forced migration experience.

Wien um 1800
Um 1800 war Wien mit ca. 270.000 Einwohnern die einzige deutschsprachige Großstadt, die sich in ihrer Internationalität, aber auch in ihrer sozialen Differenziertheit mit den Metropolen London und Paris messen konnte. Die lange Zeit einseitig auf das preußisch-kleindeutsche Paradigma zugeschnittene Kulturgeschichtsschreibung wurde dem regen kulturellen Leben Wiens dieser Zeit nicht gerecht. Das hier vorgelegte Buch macht sich zur Aufgabe, diese fruchtbare und folgenreiche Phase der Wiener Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte erstmals aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive aufzuarbeiten. Demgegenüber lässt sich Intermedialität jedoch ebenso als Wettstreit verstehen – um Legitimität. Inwieweit dienen intermediale Verfahren der medialen Dominanzbildung? Wie verlaufen die intermedialen Prozesse gegenseitiger An- und Aberkennung? Welche Rolle spielt die Grenze zwischen Kunst und Nicht-Kunst und inwiefern stellt Intermedialität eine Provokation etablierter Kunstverständnisse dar? Diesen und weiteren Fragen stellt sich der Band, der am Beispiel von Untersuchungen zur Literatur der Moderne, aber auch zu Film, Fernsehen, Comic, Computerspiel und Werbung auf die Integration funktionstheoretischer und -geschichtlicher Perspektiven in die Intermedialitätsforschung zielt.
