Sociolinguistics is one of the central branches of modern linguistics and deals with the place of language in human societies. One of the revelations with photography is that monochrome images often enable us to see the world and people in new, and often deeper, ways. Colour is such a dominant part of our vision that we often overlook more subtle variations in tones and textures. This book is a companion volume to the colour book "Rewilding the Human Spirit", but instead of repeating the contemporary narrative contained in that book, this work includes a range of directly relevant quotations which show and help to explain humans' deep and intrinsic connection to our natural world. The importance of landscape, nature and our natural world is shown both through these quotations and through just over 130 monochrome fine art nude images, involving 15 different women aged 24 to 43. The works have been shot in a range of natural locations around Europe.
A complete discussion of fundamental and advanced topics in Item Response Theory written by pioneers in the field In Item Response Theory, accomplished psychometricians Darrell Bock and Robert Gibbons deliver a comprehensive and up-to-date exploration of the theoretical foundations and applications of Item Response Theory (IRT). The first book on the topic that offers a complete and unified treatment of its subject, Item Response Theory prepares...
In revising the text opportunity has been taken to introduce SI units throughout. An Appendix has been included which contains tables of SI units and a table of conversion factors for use when consulting data in non-SI units. Chapter 19 now includes experiments demon strating the use of ion-exchange and solid-liquid chromatography_ Exercises involving colorimetry have been included in Chapter 17. These techniques are introduced as part of a complementary exercise where their relevance is seen as part of a complete piece of work. Minor improvements have been made to some of the experimental procedures and we are grateful to those who have made helpful suggestions in this respect. G. PASS H. S...

A warm story about friendship and migration from the incomparable Jean Little. Jane and Maya are very different. Maya is a quiet girl and a refugee, new to this country, while chatty and outgoing Jane has lived in the same place her whole life. The girls become instant friends. When they learn about endangered species in school, they decide to do their own small part to help by supporting migrating monarch butterflies. Together they plant a milkweed garden to feed and shelter the tiny creatures, then watch in amazement as a monarch hatches and grows before leaving on the long journey to Mexico. After all the butterflies have departed, Maya shares her own migration story -- her family's long journey to Canada. Maya wishes the monarchs safety in their new home too. In her heartwarming final story, Jean Little weaves a simple tale of childhood curiosity into larger themes of immigration, friendship and the wonder of the natural world. A true gift of a story from a Canadian treasure.
